Im running 35's on a 2005 SCREW and interested in mounting the spare up top. I have seen trucks with the spare mounted on top but have no idea where to look for the set up. Anyone have a clue?
To get the roof mount to work, you're going to need a bike or kayak system mounted to the cab first. tracks, feet, and crossbars, then a basket or carrier ontop of the crossbars.
The bed mount is much more simple, but takes up a good amount of usage cargo space.
The other option is to look into a rear bumper with a swing away carrier for the spare, like a Jeep, but bigger.
Im really looking for a roof mount, I use the bed of my truck and dont want the spare taking up half the bed. Not to mention the roof mounts look much better IMO.
Figure there has to be a kit out there somewhere.
To mount directly to your roof? Not likely. The roof itself is a pretty flexible piece. The only real strength in the entire thing are the roof's edges. This is the main reason why most aftermarket kits (Yakima and Thule being the most popular) come from the roofline edges.
Once you have a base down (feet and crossbars) then you can start to get creative, or just purchase a basket with a tire mount.
Additionally, with the basket you're bound to lose 1-2mpg because of aerodynamic drag. That'll be more like 2-3mpg drop when you put the tire up there.
Personally, I think a swing out bumper mounted carrier would be slick. Might have to go to a custom shop to have one built, but it would be bad ***.
I moved my spare to a rear swing out carrier mount after having to change a flat on a rocky, muddy spot while towing my expo trailer over imogene pass. It makes it easier to get to in those situations, but I think a roof top mount might be a PITA to get to and lift and lower when you get a flat. It's also a lot of weight on your roof.
Roof mount would have to attach to the sides of the roof around the door openings. A shop in town here made a custom rack so that the owner could do this if needed but also mount his KC lights and train horns to the roof. This guy made an expo style 250 that he could take anywhere anytime. Big dam truck but looks amazing.
I understand it will need a rack that is attached to the roof sides and all. Coskid I think you have seen exactly what Im looking for was just hoping someone sold a kit or something instead of having to get it fabricated.
I was just thinking maybe even something that mounted a rack to the top rear of the cab and angled down to the bed so it didnt take up so much bed space. Just a thought.
i have 35's on my truck and they are heavy as hell, if you have a roof mount system make shure you protect your roof from damage when throwing the tire into the holder. how big of a tire fits in the stock spare tire holder? im just wondering for myself.
maybe ask Quack Addict what he did for his over head storage setup. maybe he has found something for over the cab to help you. here is a post to link you to him if you want to ask
