Quick question: Tonight when I came home, half way through my neighborhood before some hills I put my truck in 4wd. When I put it in 4wd it made a grinding noise in the front left and possibly the right but I couldn't tell. When I kicked it out of 4wd the noise eased for about 5 seconds and went away. What's going wrong? I have a 91' F150 with auto 4wd.
dont think so, i always shifted at a dead stop. sounds like those auto hubs are shot(stripped out). or it could be bad u joints. but the best way to unlock the hubs after shifting out of 4x4 is in reverse for 10 ' or so. had the same problem, so i switched to the manual lockouts. unfortunetlly for me, its a striped out axle shaft. so i am doing a d60 solid axle swap in the near future. hopefully its just your hubs, or bad u joint.
I have no idea, but i imagine you could get a parts kit, I've rebuilt manual hubs, can't be too much different. A shop should be able to do it, but it'd prolly cost a good deal in labor.
You could also just as easily convert them to manual hubs. JBG has kits starting at 89 and up to 119. Its easy to do to, heck you don't even have to pull the tire off to swap it out.
Don't get a kit, those auto hubs aren't reliable, even new, get a set of manuals from Warn or Mile Marker, you'll be way happier (They also only cost around $100).
I can't find any places that have them, all the threads I read go the way of "switch to manuals hubs, autos are junk". You could try a local dealership, or I believe they were made by Warn. You could look them up and see what they say.
I rarely use 4wd and when I do, I don't want to get out and lock the hubs in. Do you know of an auto kit?
Thats just being lazy, manual hubs almost never fail and are much stronger than pos auto hubs. Leave them locked if you think your gonna need to use 4wd, thats what the rest of America does.
You put new auto hubs on expect to replace them at least once sooner or later.
