Getting Ignition out

I found a guy who is parting out his 97 PSD. I am thinking about taking his ignition and door locks since mine have seized up and I cant unlock them from the outside with my key anymore. I went to ford but they wanted way too much moola. Is it a difficult task to get the ignition out of the steering column?

Are you sure it is the cores? When you insert the key and turn and you, can see the key rotate in the core even a little, if you can then it is not the core.
We have a lot of problems with our locking mechenisms (linkage). I do not know what exactly it is.
I am banking on some one filling us in on this common problem.
I will pay attention to this thread b/c I need to fix my doors too.

Never done the door locks, but I did have to change the ignition.. Unhook the batteries. Turn the key to the ON position. Then pull the plastic piece off the bottom of the column and under the ignition you will see the button Blake is talking about, push/hold it in and with the key still in the ON position pull out on the lock cylinder and it will come out. When you install the new one, it will be in the ON position so put it in at the angle that ON would be, once it is on the column, you can turn it back to off. NEVER turn the lock cylinder while it's not installed in the truck unless you don't plan on using it again.

Thanks everyone. Doesn't sound too bad. Strokin, if you only changed the ignition and not the door locks do you now need two keys. One for the doors and one for the ignition? Guess that wouldn't be too bad either though.

turning the ignition lock while out of the vehicle won't mess anything up unless you release the retainer and turn it the wrong way and pull it out. Even then, it can still be put back together

Yeah, I have 2 different keys right now, but I'm going to pull the tumbler and match it up to the stock key that the truck came with. Only reason I'm going to do that is b/c the keys for my F-150 will unlock my truck. Before the ignition got stuck it would also start the truck. My PSD door key will also unlock and start my F-150. So I will have one set of keys for both trucks. LOL. Funny how the keys for both of these trucks are the same key from the factory...

Strokin, that's funny. When I married my wife she had a chevy ( I've now converted her to for) that you could start without a key. Just had to turn the ignition. Her friends knew it and would move it every day at school so she would have to go find it. Haha
