I have an 06 f350 with the 5.4L.When i'm driving and the rpm's are right around 1200,it will sputter for like a second, then in another 20 seconds or couple minutes it will do it again. If i give it gas it will up shift then it doesnt do it.It only seems to do it at that rpm. It's been doing this for quite a while,I thought it was a transmission problem because i was having other issues with the trans, but i just got it back from the trans shop, totally rebuilt and it still does it.I guess i'm not ruling out the trans but it seems to me that the problem is somewhere else.
If by tune up you mean spark plugs? There still the originals at 100,000 miles,I know what your thinkingI'm having them changed next week, but i would think the problem i'm having would be throughout the rpm range if it were the plugs. The transmission had a broken snap ring,a really big one to,he showed it to me,and the torque converter took a crap.I think the trans guy is more of a chevy guy,but he said this is one of the worst transmissions ford ever made
