I'm thinking on building myself a flatbed now, instead of going for a "replacement" longbox, simply because the long box would cost me my first born in order to get it.
Anyone have any ideas on what I could use for modeling a flatbed after something?
Or does anyone want to try and talk me out of making a flatbed, if they know of a source that sells long boxes for cheap (<- lol)?
I need some ideas for my flatbed. I'm thinking wood deck.
A flatbed is really usefull and everything, but a regular box sure looks much better!
There are so many ways to make a deck too, you can customize it how ever you want.
If you can afford it, go with aluminum. (Im guessing you would go with a regular box over the price of an aluminum deck though!)
The price of building a good well built flat deck would probably be similar to a box as well, just have to wait a while for a box to show up!
That's the thing though. I already have a contact to grab a truck box from.
He sells them for $2000 a peice (for the good ones), but he's in Alberta and only takes cash in hand.
I don't really want to spend the money that's required on my old project because I could be spending it on so many other things.
I'd end up spending 2 grand on the box, a crap-tonne of money trying to get to the box, then times that by 2 to get it back to Regina.
So yeah, I was thinking more along the lines of tubular steel, cut and painted up the way I like with either wood boards in the center that are varnished, or Rhino board (so it lasts longer).
Any takes on this? Aluminum is nice stuff, but I've heard of others having problems with it on a truck this old because it lifts the rear end due to weight loss, which makes the ride of the truck a lot more rough. Not exactly what I want.
This is along the lines of what I was thinking. Any comments?
I have a flat deck I may be looking to unload come spring time. I know it is 8' long but not sure on the width. I will sell it to you cheap as all I need is some cash to buy a box for my 50 F68.

That might actually be fantastic. It all depends on what it looks like and what the dimensions are. I'm looking to make my own based on the pictures above.
Can you email me some pictures of the flatdeck you're thinking of selling? If it's not covered in snow... lol.

might be cheaper to measure yours out and get the sides bent up out of 14/12 ga steel and assemble it yourself
This sound give some idea of what it looks like. The fellow how built it did a real nice job.
Yeah, that looks like a really good and sturdy flatdeck. I like the light system on the back, looks really cool haha.
I like how it's simple, yet looks like it gets the job done reguardless of what needs to be dealth with.
Are those side panels (vertical wood boards) able to be replaced or removed? I'm looking for just a straight up flat, flat deck.
If I do end up taking it off your hands, I'll most likely do some of my own modifications to it so that it's how I like it, but it looks good from what I see.
If you want, email me with some more info on the dimensions and price that you're looking to get rid of it for. That should give me a good idea of how interested in it I should be.
Thanks for posting up the pictures, looking good so far!
I'm going to scoop that up if I can. Man, that's a fan-freakin-tastic deal on a box. As long as everything has been done correctly, it'll look amazing on my truck.
Thanks for the update! I'll surely look into it and keep my eye out for more of these. Definitely owe you some rep points for searching this out!
Not a problem man. Nipawin is actually my home town as well, I can go check it out for you, even bring it back to saskatoon or whatever if you decide to get it. Im not sure when the next time I will be going back home is though.

"even bring it back to saskatoon or whatever if you decide to get it". That is a fantastic offer I may have to take you up on.
Right now, I'm a bit busy at the moment, so I can't even go see it myself or pick it up.
I would pick it up immediately if I could, but the next time off I have is some time into Feb.
Hopefully by that time, the box isn't gone.
Guess I've got to start praying to the Ford gods that it isn't gone by the time I want to go and grab it.
I'll keep you posted on what happens, and if I decide to go and grab it.
I would however like to take you up on your offer to take a look at it for me, if you end up going home anytime soon. I was asking some questions over the phone last night, but I only got a short sentence or one word answer out of the guy.
I'm looking for a good description of the condition of the box where you can't see it in the pictures. Under the fenders, inside the box (where all that snow is in the pix, Under the box (check for rusted out mounting points, rusted out bed), and the corners of the box (because you can't see the corners very well... the pictures aren't that close).
If you go home before I get to it, definitely take a look at it for me in the spots I specified (basically whatever the pictures don't show). If I make it to the box before you do, don't worry about it. I wouldn't go out of your way to get home just because of me and my box troubles.
Thanks for your offers though, I'll keep you posted!
