I just drove a 2011 3.7 XLT with a manual transfer case. I was really surprised to see it, and the more I thought about it, the more I liked it. I didn't think about the hubs though. Any idea if the hubs are manual?

i would warn readers that fords "manual" transfer case is just an electric switch in a different location ... that is, the floor instead of the dash. i can vouch for my dad-in-law's 97 being electric, and our 2004's at work being electric.... both on the floor, i can't see that they would have changed anything from 04 ... that is to say, i dont see them going back to manual linkages. (but i've been wrong once or twice)

you do get the neutral with the floor shifter, which is what most are wanting, i think.

Seems to me that the 11's got a "flat tow" set up for RV'ers .... where did i read that?

..edit..

Looks like the 12's get a neutral position for the ESOF transfer case?

RECREATIONAL TOWING
Note:
Put your climate control system in recirculated air mode to
prevent exhaust fumes from entering the vehicle. Refer to the
Climate
Controls
chapter.
Follow these guidelines if you need to tow your vehicle behind another
vehicle, such as a motor home. The guidelines are designed to prevent
damage to your vehicle and its transmission after it is hooked-up to the
tow vehicle or tow dolly.

2WD vehicles
cannot be towed with any wheels on the ground as
vehicle or transmission damage may occur. The vehicle must be towed
with all four wheels off the ground (i.e. with a car-hauling trailer).

4WD vehicles
can only be towed with all wheels on the ground by
placing the transfer case in its neutral position and engaging the
four-wheel-down towing feature. Perform the steps outlined in the

Four-wheel-down towing
section after positioning your vehicle behind
the tow vehicle and properly securing them together

Four-wheel-down towing
1. Turn the ignition to the on position; do not start the engine.
2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
3. Shift the 4WD switch to 2H.
4. Shift the transmission to N (Neutral).
5. Rotate the 4WD switch from 2H to 4L and back to 2H five times
within seven seconds.
If completed successfully, the instrument cluster displays NEUTRAL
TOW LEAVE IN N
or NEUTRAL TOW ENABLED LEAVE
TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL
, indicating that the vehicle is safe
to tow with all wheels on the ground.

If the message is not shown in the display, the procedure must be
performed again from the beginning.

An audible noise may be heard as the transfer case shifts into its
neutral position; this is normal.
6. Leave the transmission in N (Neutral) and turn the ignition as far as it
will go toward the off position (it will not turn fully off when the
transmission is in N [Neutral]). The key must be left in the ignition while
towing. To lock and unlock your vehicle, use the keyless entry keypad or
extra set of keys.
7. Release the brake pedal.

Note:
Four-wheel-down towing status can be checked at any time by
opening the driver’s door or turning the ignition to the accessory or on
position and verifying the NEUTRAL TOW ENABLED message is
displayed in the cluster.
To exit four-wheel-down towing and return the transfer case to its 2H
position:
1. With the vehicle still properly secured to the tow vehicle, press and
hold the brake pedal.
2. Turn the ignition to the on position; do not start the engine.
3. Shift the transmission out of N (Neutral) and into any gear.
4. Release the brake pedal.

If completed successfully, the instrument cluster displays 4X2, and

NEUTRAL TOW DISABLED
.

If the indicator light and message do not display, the procedure must
be performed again from the beginning.

An audible noise may be heard as the transfer case shifts out of its
neutral position; this is normal.
5. Apply the parking brake, then disconnect the vehicle from the tow vehicle.
6. Release the parking brake, start the engine, and shift the transmission
to D (Drive) to make sure the transfer case is out of N (Neutral).
7. If the transfer case will not successfully shift out of N (Neutral), set
the parking brake until the vehicle can be serviced.

at least the function is available ...

but why not just put an "N" position on the switch?!?!?! would't that be much easier/straightforward/obvious ....

i'm thinking ford is screwing them selves on this one. RV'ers are used to looking for the Neutral position on the transfer case to KNOW FOR SURE they can flat tow. I'm guessing there is a segment that simply moves on if they don't see that option clearly marked on the 4x4 switch.

research is not the general buying public's strong suite.

There haven't been any manual locking hubs offered on an F150 since 1996.

sorry to bring up an old thread but i'm new here and i just got a 2009 f150 STX 4x4. i was searching the 4x4 problems i'm experiencing on google and came across this site and thread.

i have the manual shift transfer case (as mentioned above still electronic but shifter is on the floor). mine does have the neutral position however when i shift it in to 4H or 4L nothing happens. i'm not getting the indicator light in the dash, no clunking, jerking, or any noses indicating that it is now in 4x4. note i have tried to shift it into 4x4 while in park, in neutral, while the truck was running, while it was off, and even when i was in motion (less than 5mph). i have tried researching and i think that my problem is the transfer case shift motor…. can anyone confirm this or point me in the right direction to fix my problem?
