hey im lookin to buy my friends 1990 bronco custom with the 4.9 straight 6 but he blew the transfer case on it and im wonderin how easy it is to find another transfer case for it? will only the same transfer case from the same model bronco fit in it? its a 5 speed with manual floor shift 4wd.
The Borg-Warner 1356 should be the t-case in that truck. They were put into Broncos and F-150s from 1990 through at least 1996 for the Bronco but I am not sure if it was used in the F-150 after 96. Any manually shifted BW1356 from a Bronco or F-150 in the 90-96 model years will work. The generation prior to the BW1356 was the BW1345 which was used in the same trucks from approximately 1980-1989. The question of shift linkages comes into play if you change t-case models. You already have the linkage for the BW1356. To the best of my knowledge, the Borg-Warner t-cases both came OEM behind the M5OD so finding shift linkages for the older 1345 shouldn't be too difficult if you can't get your hands on a 1356.
If you are considering changing t-cases all together for strength considerations the New Process 205 will bolt to the M5OD but the question of shift linkages is still a factor. I am relatively certain the New Process t-cases never came OEM behind the M5OD however, for strength, the 205 is really hard to beat. Not to mention the fact that it can be converted to "twin stick" operation if you really want to go crazy.
