Hey guys I have a few questions being a newb to f150s.
1. It looks like my truck has 6 speakers (2 tweeters in the door right above the front door speakers.) Was this an option on these trucks?
2. If it does have 6 speakers, how hard is it to replace the factory head unit with an aftermarket one and retain all the factory speakers and sound quality? Example - I know in mustangs that had the mach 460 sound system it was very complicated (meaning more to it than just buying a harness for the new radio) to get an aftermarket deck to work with the factory speakers and factory amps.
You won't have any problems. All you'll need is the harness adapter that plugs into the factory radio connector, then splice the other end of it into the head unit harness.
It's been a while since I did mine. Walmart used to sell the adapter that fits the harness in back of the head unit. I don't see it anymore. You'll need to find it online or at some installer. The head unit slides out easily. Just pop out the trim piece. Start from the ash tray and work upwards. There's like 6 or 8 snaps--can't remember
If you have 6 speakers, you probably have the audiophile system and have a sub on the back wall on the driver side. My truck came with only 4 speakers.
One thing about the stock speakers is they're 'not that bad.' When I swapped all of them out with some 5x7/6x8 Infinity Reference component speakers, the low end wasn't as good. I seem to remember other guys say the same with other speakers also, however, that was ok in my case...I used them for mid-ends and supplemented them with a JL subwoofer powered off a 250W JL amp :
I just went though the system in my truck and updated it. The deck is pretty easy to do, like aquaman said start with the ashtray, I actually started with the little cubby-hole below the ash tray and work your way up. the trim comes of fairly easy just take your time and go slow so you dont snap it in half. I put in an alpine ivaw203 unit and used this adapter to go from the factory harness to the radio. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Metra+-+...=1218104801815
Other than that if you have steering wheel controls and youd like to retain them google PAC SWI-JACK and that takes care of it. I had already had plans to put alpine 5x9s in the doors, but the stock speakers really didnt sound that bad, of course the sound is much better with the new speakers.
Hhhmmm well I haven't looked for a sub but it doesn't sound like there is one..and I don't know for sure that I have 6 speakers its just that the factory grill/cover looks like it has small tweeters above the door speakers...ill check the back for a sub today
Well I can't find an easy way to look behind the seat in the back...but I took a flashlight and looked in the grill where the tweeter should be and it doesn't look like a speaker is in there but I can't be sure without taking the door panel off..does ford use the same grill regardless if it has the tweeters or not? That could be the cause for my confusion..
Some of these trucks had the little mounting hole for a tweeter punched into the door panel, others did not. The grill plates were used the same way, some did some didnt have holes... But just becuase they had the holes in the grill and the tweeter mount didnt mean they came with tweeters.....My 08 has the holes for tweeters but doesnt have tweeters and the grillplate has holes showing through to where the tweeters would be. The grill plate pops off very easily if you want to check.
There was no tweeter installed behind the grill in my truck. The good thing is--the cutout behind is big enough to take any aftermarket tweeter!
just keep in mind that if you do chose to upgrade your stock speakers you can get new speakers with tweeters at a pretty good price. the alpine type r 5x9s I got have tweeters intergrated in them. just food for thought
