Today my 78 F250 4x4 started marking a grinding noise whenever I hit a pothole or bump. Sounds like it's coming from the passenger side front axle. It's never done this before and it stops when I make a hard right turn. I had to drive home this way so it took awhile with all the extra right turns. The hubs were not engaged at all and the 4 wheel drive worked fine the other day. Any ideas?
Sounds like the wheel bearings are shot or the ball joints are out letting the spindle lean when you hit a bump. Jack up[ that side and see if there is any play in the wheel bearings. Grab top and bottom of tire and see if it will rock in and out.
I agree, have someone look under the truck for you while you rock the wheel top and bottom, and side to side. It's hard to do both by yourself. (look at parts and rock the wheel) Look at tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearing play. If all that looks tight, don't leave out axle u-joints. They may be getting seized from mud and grinding the needle bearings away. You said you were just wheelin' the other day, right? It couldn't hurt to pop the hub off and look in there, either.
They don't move much, but yes, they're ball joints. There's only two king pins per truck, one on each side. One pin goes through the top and bottom of the joint. Like Dave said, if it was a king pin, you wouldn't be able to put a driveshaft to the hub.
I thought they were kingpins since it's a dana 60. This is the first solid axle truck I've had.
If you have a Dana 60 ( square plate on top and bottom of knuckle, held on by 4 bolts) Then you do have a king pin front end. It has a metal cone on top with a plastic tapered bushing held dowm by a spring. On the bottom there is a bearing and race with a pin on the square plate going though it. These should not make the grinding noise you are hearing. I am still going with wheel bearings, or something in the lockout. Bruce
