Wife's 2010 F150 4x4 85000 KMs makes grinding / ratcheting noise in LH front axle when in 2 wheel drive. Mostly when turning left some times when traveling straight never when turning right. Never makes the noise when in four wheel drive.
I am suspecting the auto hub is the issue but wonder if others have had this trouble ?
What's the story on this issue, I am reading more and more problems with these front hubs.
To me it seems so widespread, that it's not a matter of if they will fail but when. I never worried about this with my 2011, as it was a 2wd. But I got to admit, I do worry a little for my 2013, FX4. I'm sure this is a costly item to repair outside the warranty period.
My garage is full and it is too cold here to replace the IWE unit today. I have disconnected the electrical connector from the IWE solenoid. This should leave both hubs locked in but still allow the transfer case to shift to 4x2. This will spin the front end when in 4x2 and eventually wear something out but it will be fine for a couple of weeks communing to work. I went for a test drive and this has not caused any warning lights so think it is OK for a bit. When it warms up I will change the IWE vacuum clutch. I found good youtube video showing how to remove the half shaft then the IWE unit but the video shows a half shaft that bolted to the drive axles (inner end of half shaft) with 6 cap screws. The 2010 I have is not a bolted flange. Will have to keep looking for video that matches this truck.
