collapsed fuel filter

ok so my nieghbor has a 08 f-250 and the other day he is driving and the truck shutters and shuts down on him, he trys to start it but it just turns, so he gets it towed to the dealership, and the next day the shop guy calls and says your fuel filter was clogged and it collapsed and parts of the filter got sucked thru the fuel system and screwed up 2 injectors, then the guy asked when was the last time you replaced your fuel filter nieghbor replys with "20,000 miles or so" well ford is now saying since it wasnt changed at 15,000 they are not covering it under warranty due to neglect or something along that line.
so mine and my nieghbors question is, is it that crittical to be on top of that fuel filter change that often and right at that precise moment of 15,000? have you guys heard of this before?

Fuel filter interval maintenance is extremely important, and so is using OEM filters.

It is important to meet the letter of the terms of the warranty.

However, operating conditions may dictate that you exceed the terms of the warranty required interval.

Bad fuel could plug it up regardless of the # of miles.
similarly, not using anti-gel if it's too cold, etc. etc.

It's a "recommended" change interval for a reason.
Your mileage MAY vary and usually does.

i would ask to see the filter first.

i agree. if you are in colder climates then cold-semi gelled fuel could have caused it and they blaming it on clogged filter.

From Ford's perspective the cause was definitely a plugged filter and the exceeded interval. After that, the owner can take it up w/ a fuel supplier.
