Muffler Swap Question
Hello everyone. A new user here and a newbie to Ford trucks as well. I recently purchased a 1997 F-250 with the 5.4L V8 engine. I would like to make my truck sound louder and have a deeper tone to it, so I am wondering would a simple and cheap replacing of my current stock muffler with an aftermarket muffler (Flowmaster, Cherry Bomb, etc.) do the trick? Or would I be wasting my money with just that swap and need new pipes and other new things to my exhaust? I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of money here ($100-$150), and I would have a shop install anything on my truck.
Cherry Bomb would be louder, but harsher than the Flowmaster. Up to you. Why not do it yourself....MUCH! cheaper and not a tough installation. New muffler would include the correct length for your truck to replace the stock one. Think all you'd need is a 1/2 or 5/8 in wrench. Maybe new clamps......
I guess I could....I'm just worried I'd mess something up. Haha. But again, would just a muffler swap alone give me a louder and deeper sound? And would I be asking too much for any performance gains as well?
If you're looking for some extra sound and performance then maybe look into the Magnaflow. I have a dual set-up on my truck and it produces good sound and with the straight-through design it helps with performance.

Yeah, the Delta baffles of the Flowmasters and Cherrybombs are great for sound, but not the most condusive to performance. Straight through mufflers are also great sounding. I would recommend a WickedFlow, which will cost you less than a Magnaflow and it has a smoother sound. you can get them here.

Thank you guys for the replies and suggestions. I'd say I'm more interested in a louder sound then any performance. Looking at many options and doing a little research, I came across some glasspacks, a Cherry Bomb and the Dynomax Bullet. Any one ever use these on their trucks? Any negatives to using a glasspack?
Glasspacks are pretty loud, but can be quite restrictive. The louvers create a lot of turbulence, which creates backpressure. They are sometimes more restrictive than many stock mufflers. But they are loud, and if that is what you are after, thats not a bad bet. The Aero Turbines are very loud, and really quite free flowing.

if you want cheap and loud then definately glasspacks on most of them you can turn them backwards so the louvers dont catch the exhaust
i put a thrush glasspack on my truck and also cut off one of the cats it sounds really good and it didnt even have louvers
if you wanna make a glasspack even louder you can pour gas down it, let it soak in and throw matches at it until she catches on fire and burns out the fiberglass and boom pretty much a straight tube but you can still say you have mufflers but your taking your own risk on getting hurt there
