I have an '84 F150 with a 300 I6. Within the next couple of weeks, I'm planning on installing EFI manifolds, and I've been planning on running a true dual exhaust with 2 1/4 inch pipes to 2 Flowmaster Super 44's, exiting out the sides of the truck, in front of the rear wheels. My main goasl for this set up are loudness and tone, and after considering the pros and cons of a true dual exhaust, I'm beginning to consider a y-pipe at the manifolds to one 2 1/2 inch pipe and a single Flowmaster Super 44. My question is, which set-up would be louder?
sorry if this ignorant but how would you run a dual exhaust out of an i6
If he switches to the efi manifolds there will be two of them, thus leading to two pipes.
I think the dual might be louder but i'm not positive. Those mufflers should sound good either way you go though. I have a single 3" exhaust for my 300 with a super 44 also. Expect some drone if you run it in out in front of the rear tires dual or single.
but it's your truck and I will defend your rights to do what you want to it !!!
(as long as you don't wake me up at night with it )
Interestingly enough, I used to run a straight pipe, cut off up under the cab. My buddy and I set about removing the emissions equipment from the truck when I realized I didn't have to pass emissions. And the catalytic converter was pretty high priority. Well, we put a piece of test pipe in place of the cat, but the down pipe from the manifold and the pipe to the muffler were two different sizes, and it kept slipping off, so I just tied the test pipe to the frame and ran straight pipe.
No joke, my truck could be heard from two and a half miles out. Knowing it was that loud, I would always push in my clutch and try to roll past as quietly as possible when I saw cops in an attempt to keep from getting pulled over. And one day, I passed a cop running wide open in third. Didn't even see him till I passed him. He pulled me over, asked me why my truck was so loud. I told him that I had left my truck somewhere overnight, and someone had stolen my catalytic converter. And that I had gotten a piece of test pipe, but it sometimes slipped off.. He thought for a moment, told me to get it fixed and let me go.
The catalytic converter is still sitting up under a shelf in my buddy's shop.
No mufflers at all would be the loudest, and to be honest I loved the sound. However, straight pipe gets annoying after a while. Especially when it's cut off under the cab. Can't hear anything in the cab. Can't hear the radio, and I had to yell at whoever was riding with me so they'd hear me. Having to worry about cops got old real fast, and I got tired of getting out of the truck with my ears ringing.
Interstingly enough though, when I was running that straight pipe, my 300 I6 was louder than pretty much all the V-8's around town that had straight pipes.
