I have an 85 bronco with the 300 6, 4spd. manual with granny low. I want to swap in a 351w 4b. It has to be carbed, because I like the thought of keeping it computer-free. Can you tell me what I need to do to pull this swap off? Any tips and tricks? Do I need a new bellhousing, flywheel, radiator, anything else? LAst thing, does anybody have an engine? Thank you for your help with this. jeff
You can swap in the 351, but its possibly going to cost you more than trying to modify your six.
If you have to have the 351, then you'll need motor mounts, you can reuse the same trans you have, with the same bellhousing. You'll have to have a different flywheel, as the 300 six is a neutral balance engine. You'll have to have a 28oz imbalance flywheel.
you'll need a radiator, and probably a few more small parts that i can't think of at the moment.
Unfortunately, I have to replace my 6. I threw a rod or rods in it last week and the engine is toast. From what I understand, it will cost more to try to rebuild my engine than it will to buy a used rebuilt longblock. So, I am looking into the engine swap route. Do I need the motorplate too? Or will that work okay for my application?
"It shouldn't be that much trouble, just a few friends, some cold ones and a weekend and it should pretty much fall together."
That is the problem, unfortunately, I have no facilities to do this myself. I have to have a shop do it. I wish I could do it myself. If I had the place to do it, I definitely would do it myself.
I can also feel you there too, most of my friends stay so busy, that any mods i'm doing, i have to do myself, and i don't really have the facilities to do it either.
How much is this shop going to charge in labor to swap out all these parts? And are you supplying the parts or letting the shop take care of it?
If they are doing it for you, on the low side, then thats awesome. But if they have quoted you anything over 1400 dollars to do this, i'd search around for another six and have them to install that, it would be much easier, and you'd owe the shop less.
I'm not trying to talk you into keeping the six, as i understand the reason you want the 351...but if the bigger engine ends up costing more, i'd hunt for another 300.
It looks like around 750 labor to swap the engine, if the supply the parts or if I supply the parts. Still lots of money, but I can do it. Thanks for your help. jeff
actually you may find that you will loose power going to a 351. A straight six especially one as big as the 300 will have more toque than most v-8s, i know a 300 will out pull a 302 anny day but im not shure on the 351.
A 351 has more torque overall. At and below 2000 rpm, the 351 will have slightly less torque, but above that it will have much more. You're talkin 17% more displacement with similar or higher compression ratio, you can't help but make more torque. I remember a 383 some 4x4 mag built up (about 5 months ago now I think). At 2000 rpm (where they started the dyno test, what use is that when you're crawling?!?!) the 383 had 2 ft-lbs more than a stock EFI 300. Needless to say I was LMAO. Of course over that point, the 383 absolutely wrecked the 300, but I like to enjoy even the little victories
