I'm planning on doing an engine swap from a 302 to 351w. I am going to need the flexplate for a 351w that will fit on a 4R70W/AODE transmission. I am having trouble finding this 351w/4R70W tranny combo to get the flexplate out of. If anyone knows if this combination ever existed please tell me. Getting this part is crucial to the engine swap or else it may not work out.
The engine management for the 351/E4OD combo controls the E4OD also. You you ran a carbed 351 or a 351 with engine management for a standard transmission (F-250 or above) I would think you might be able to get it to work. Although the 4R70W might be computer controlled.
The reason they didn't put the 4R70W behind it was the torque from the 351 is more than what the 4R70W is rated for, I think.
But again, I am not sure. I know they ONLY transmission they put behind the 351 was the E4OD in later years, the 4R70W came behind the 302 in certain cases.
You won't find a Ford PCM for 351 and 4R70W... You'd have to get separate or custom controllers, I think there are companies out there that make computers to just control the transmission but it will be pricey. Better off to spend the money and put the right transmission in, the 4R70W is good for 700ft/lbs of torque, the E4OD (4R100) is good for 1000ft/lbs.
So it sounds like to me it would just be easier to keep a 302 with my 4R70W and try to build it up and make some more horsepower. Probably cheaper too. I'm working with a fairly limited budget. Would it be possible to run a carbed 351 and find a truck with the 4R70W and get the computer out of it?
The computer from the truck with the 4R70W would expect a motor to control, I don't think it would work with a carbed setup. I think Baum Engineering makes controllers that work just to control an E4OD/4R100 (same thing basically, just updated in 4R100 form) but I don't know about the 4R70W. Lot of money either way..
