Question tailgate swap

would an 80-86 tailgate fit on my 92 f150?

I believe the answer would be yes, the only diff would be the 80-86 used a linkage to support the tailgate when it was down whereas the 87-96 used cables.

no it wont....

i tried to put the one off my 88 on my dads 86 it wont work...

Linkage was dropped in 83 or so. I'm not sure when the cutoff is. I've heard 80-86, then 87-92. Someone should know this.

80-82 shows 1 part #, 83-86 another, then 87-91, then 92-97. Of course, some of those might have different body lines but still physically interchange.

The latch and cable support locations are different and would have to be changed.

NO! the 80 to 86 will not fit the 87 and up truck beds. The lower hinges are diffrent sizes. The older ones will fit but will fall out of the hinges as they are bigger than the 87 and up beds.

I got burnt on my 84 F250, purchased a 88 tailgate and no go.......
