Howling rear gear

A couple of months ago I changed the fluid in my diff and while I was in there I found three broken teeth on my ring gear. Put it back togrther with new oil and the whining has steadily increased to the point I have to do something about it. Bought a new gearset and bearings as well as a clutch pack for the locking diff.
Any one have any hints to look out for or things not to do?. I have never done a rear end before but am skilled in using dial indicators and have done several trannies, both manual and automatics.

Any help would be appreciated.

Which axle is it? You really need shop manual or dvd or some other guide, as the gear pattern, depth, backlash, bearing preload and probably several other things need to be right.

IMO if you are going to do a bunch of axles, learn it. Otherwise, pay for it. It is time consuming for the experienced mechanic, and if you make a mistake, you get to do it all over again, or listen to your new gears howl away....

Well, I am a pretty good mechanic. I rebuild blowers for a living and they are the toughest things i have to work on. I have also read Randy's Ring & Pinion book and do not see anything mysterious about it. The toughest part about it to me is getting the rear end out and on a bench.

It is a 10.5" full floating DRW with 4.10 and limited slip.

Well, that's the other joy, working on it under the truck...

You're probably up to it and would do it right, but consider this--if you worked a little OT on job one, wouldn't you make more than enough money to pay someone for whom the axle is job one? Just a thought, good luck whichever way you go.

Thats part of the problem 85e150. I am not working enough to get any OT. I am lucky to get 8 hours a week so I do have the time to

I do have the whole third member out from under the truck and on a bench. Have it torn down and am going back together with it now.

I did notice something funny at teardown. The limited slip clutches were not assembled the way one would think. The clutch pack was assembled as follows: driven-driver-driver-driver-driver-driven-driven-driven-driven. You would think they would be every other one. Whats up with this?

Thanks for the vote of confidence.

I'd check that out, that doesn't sound right. Maybe someone will pipe up on that.

I don't see anything identical to what you are doing, but a quick look here might give you some background:

I looked over your information and didn't see anything related to the LS assembly, Thanks anyway.
I went back together with them arranged in every other order. I have to work tomorrow so I probably won't install the ring & pinion till tuesday. If perhaps someone should chime in with a different opinion I can change the order easily.

Yea, drive/driven/drive/driven should be the way. That's how bike clutches are, and the LS is a clutch type set up. Makes no sense the way you found it.

Somebody told me it all depends on how aggressive you want the LS to be. I paid for it, it should be as aggressive as it can be. I just hope I don't start breaking axles.

I have broken axles before and when I have, I loose all drive so I would think the LS should be more aggressive.

Thanks for your help

Well, Got my rear end together and the assembly went smooth. Gear pattern came out just like the book called for. Went for a test ride and the gears sounded real quiet. Stopped after 5 miles to take temp and differential was @ 125°. Made a U-turn to return home. Got about half way back and smelled smoke and heard some grinding. Limped back home & removed dvr side wheel. Broken axle and burned up hub & because hub was at such an odd angle, it broke the brake caliper. I quit for today!

See post #2.

However, what happened with your axle is just about the last thing I would have guessed to go wrong with a rebuild.

Wasn't this a full floater axle? Is the housing damaged?

Sorry it went this way.

Don't know yet. Got discusted and walked away from it for the night. Something went wrong in the driver side wheel bearings/spindle. I've had the wheel hubs off this thing a hundred times in the past.I guess it is the simple things that one overlooks most often.
