open rear diff convert to LS diff?

Can you convert a open rear diff to a limited slip diff by adding the appropriate clutches to the diff? Is this possible? I have a brand new diff clutch kit that i was going to install in my mustang but bought a 92 f150 flareside for my project instead. I'm swapping over all my rear end internals to my new truck (3.73 gears, brand new bearings) but the mustang has a 28 spline carrier and can't use it. So Can you just add the clutch kit to the existing diff carrier in the truck and make it limited slip?

You will need an entire 31 spline limited slip carrier for your truck, and will then need to reset you ring and pinion accordingly. So, the short answer is no.

There is one locker you can install inside an open diff, it replaces the spider gears and it's called the Powertrax Lockrite. A friend of mine had one in his Ranger and it worked well and wasn't too noisy.. it did clunk some around street corners but was otherwise invisible. Easy install too only took about an hour.

There are a few different brands out there, but any drop it locker, or lunch box locker as they are commonly called, can be an option. I had one in my jeep for 3 years until the springs let out. I now have a spool.

What are you planning to do with the truck?
