Question Adjusting E4OD IP

89 7.3 E4OD
How do I adjust the voltage in the FIP?
Having shifting problems, Not wanting to go into 3rd.
1-2 shifts fine..

Was told I need to check the amps. Trying to get the Voltage finder in the morning. But I don't know what I'm looking for when adjusting.
What exactly gets adjusted?

Thanks.

Welcome!

Have a read over the last paragraph of this page on how to adjust the throttle position sensor (sometimes called the Fuel injector pump lever sensor or FILP sensor).

Ford diesel 6.9 7.3 IDI

You can try checking that but I suspect you might have other problems if it shifts out of 1st gear normally.

Do you have any idea's of what other problems I might have?
I just put another trans in it. The filter fell off the other and burnt it up. So I just replaced it with this one. At first, I couldn't get it to shift out of 1st while in D. Then I swoped the Nswitch from the older trans.. And now it will shift only 1-2.
3rd thumps and goes right back to 2nd.
I think O/D is working. Coming to a stop feels like it down shifting while light is pressed.
Thanks.

"Nswitch"-

You mean the black neutral safety switch on the shift lever of the transmission? (usually called the manual lever position sensor or MLPS)

It has to be aligned properly as shown here"

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ml#post8124084

Have you verified that your TPS is set correctly?

When I said you might have another problem, I didn't realize you were able to get 3rd gear to respond.

Is this a rebuilt transmission or is it a used one? (are you certain it was a good unit before putting it in?)

Yes David. I ment the MLPS.
I got a MultiMeter today. I'm going to adjust TPS in the morning. I couldn't find a Torq Socket to fit the screws.
3rd gear will not engage. Trys to, but clunks and stays in 2nd.
I'm fearing damage if I continue to force it. So I let off and coast into my drive.
I was told that the trans was rebuilt, guy tried to put it into a 93-94 7.3 But he had too many / or not enough slots on the wireing harness. It came from 89 (same as mine).

I read the post and a diagnoss inside the post given. Could my Alt. really cause a problem with the Diesel version? I've heard many views. MLPS, TPS ect.

Before I did anything today, I first ran a Code scanner. It told me the BP/Map, was out of range. Then checked out fine.
I called FORD, they had never heard of this (BP/MAP) on a 7.3
While trying to find the problem with the older trans, I got MANY codes. After changing trans, I have only this one.

To add to that...
The guy that I got the trans from. Drove it a couple miles and said all was fine. But due to the harness difference, He couldn't get O/D to work.
I can feel O/D in the down-shift when coming to a stop...Feels just like my 2000 did when I used it....don't know how helpful this info is to you. Just desperate, lol, and trying Not to leave any details out.
Thanks again.....

I posted that mainly to show the TPS adjustment. Depending on how the alternator fails, it might cause problems but I don't know very much about that. I can't remember it happening on the forums.

How do your speedometer and tachometer perform? They have to be pretty close to perfect for the transmission computer to work properly.

I have large tires on the back. So my speedo is about 5miles off. Worked fine (driving and shifting) until the filter fell out causing old trans to overheat.
The rpm works perfect.
I read over at thedieselstop that e4od needs perfection from these two.

I still have the older trans. If the TPS doesn't fix my prob. I'm plaining on switching out the Shift solinoid. Don't want too. But I'm getting to the end of my rope with this truck.
Is this a smart Idea?

My father is a shadetree mechanic. And he is pushing me to change out the shifting solinoid.
But as I expected. He has no knowledge working on a Diesel.
I understand that Diesel's work a little differently. But how much diff could they be?
Thanks for your time David85....
I need all the imput......

There are some differences between the small block, big block, and diesel calibrated E4ODs but internally they are very similar. The diesel transmissions are the most built up and each of the 3 versions have their own valve body callibrations. The solenoid bodies are the same within a given model year.

Not sure your solenoid body is the problem though. To produce 2nd gear automatically, both shift solenoids need to activate unless you are using the shift lever to manually engage 2nd gear (in which case the valve body will over ride the shift solenoids to produce 2nd gear). To produce 3rd gear, one shift solenoid is actually switched off and both are off in 4th.

I adjusted the TPS yesterday.
Second adjustment : I got the amps/volts next to perfect.. But it made 1-2nd shift hard and higher in rpm. I really think 3rd tryed to kick in, but it Slipped badly and back to 2nd quickly. In and out of high 2nd. When it's time for 3rd to kick in, the trans slipps badly.

What should I focus on next? O/D light isn't blinking, fluid level is perfect, And I didn't find any codes.
I read some where that a 93-94 has a TECA Relay. Would my 89 idi have the same?

Yes yours will have a relay in it. From reading other posts, its located on the driver's side inner fender behind the windshild washer reservoir (don't own a truck of that year myself). As for the overdrive light blinking - that only started on trucks made in 1992 or later.

What I might suggest trying is running the truck on jack stands with the wheels off the ground instead of running it under load with this situation. Try this only if you can do so safely and never go above 55 MPH on the speedo (wheels blocked, rear end not pointing to anything that could be harmed by thrown stones, etc). It will allow you to troubleshoot the problem a little more easily and with less chance of damaging the transmission. In reality, you likely won't have to go very high to get the transmission into 3rd.

I have done this before. The day after I installed the trans.
It was one of the first things I tried.

I have not tried it since I adjusted the FIPL.
I will have to try it in the morning.

By chance, you wouldn't know what that relay looks like? Read that Trailer Tow Relay is the same size and all......
Thanks again for the helpful Ideas....

The relay should be in the fuse box in the engine bay over the driver's side fender. It should be labelled as "TECA" relay or something like that.
