As i mentioned i just got the truck. It has a new inj pump, new injectors, new vac pump. Should I maybe adjust the inj pump? It's got plenty of power but at 75 if i step on it to pass someone on I-10 it pours out black smoke. Is this just normal? This is my first diesel, I've always had big gas trucks.
Black smoke is partially burnt fuel, adjusting the fuel screw would solve that or perhaps your timing is off. Are you timing marks aligned, retarded or advanced? Do you know if they are new or the guy who sold it to you just said that?
Where the IP bolts to there should be a timing mark engraved in the IP and the place where it bolts into. Lemme look for a pic, its gonna take way too long to explain.
if it is a new pump and injectors etc etc, he may have adjusted the fuel screw or bought a turbo pump, which in either case, would be too much fuel for an NA.
Maybe I'm blowing this out of proportion. I filled it up today and figured out im getting close to 14mpg and part of that was with it idling for a couple hours with the ac running while I installed the stereo. Im guessing this is pretty good since my 98 chevy 3/4 ton with a 350 never went over 12mpg.
mpg, and blowing black smoke at high rpm is different but the same. Sounds wierd but what i mean is that you can still get relatively good mpg's and melt your pistons. Idling is the best fuel mileage on earth. hard to factor that in.
