My dealer had a 6.4 towed in their shop. Fould truck with 31,000 miles, would not start. Found trash in fuel filter, though bad fuel, (NOT BOUGHT BAD FUEL). Tank was kept low on fuel long times. The fuel level parts in tank had rusted & got in fuel!
Ford backed up their warranty!
sounds like alot of condensation build-up. Wonder that he did not have water contamination too. Or maybe he did but because of the fuel tank issue they are taking care of it.
Low fuel in tank means lots of air in the fuel tank. As the air changes temps from night to day causes the expansion and contraction of the air pulling in moist night air that condenses water in the tank.
I top my tank tank off every time it is convienent and never let the tank get below a quarter tank if possible.
Yep. Been keeping all of my trucks at 1/2 tank or better for many years. Like has been stated, the benefit of less condensation plus less chance of ice crystals/gel in the tank. Plus, these days it hurts too much to have to fill it up when it is close to empty .

Yep, it's definitely easier to put in a half tank twice as often!
I am new to diesels and pickups in general. I assume the reason for keeping above don't apply if you are on a road trip, correct? So, if I'm traveling for six or seven hours and going 500miles straight, I can let it get to below 1/4 tank, fill it up, and keep going. But I shouldn't let it SIT with anything less than 1/4, or even 1/2 tank.

Is all of that pretty much correct?
Thanks,
Chris
Based upon your usage I would not worry about it. Just don't ever let it get down to 0 miles to empty..

AMEN on that and it keep getting worse...
In who's world did it start costing more to process diesel that gasoline?
The fuel sending unit has metal parts. The tank is plastic but the fuel sender is not.
Also, another thing to remember is that it's not just the driving around with a low tank. The owner probably got the fuel level low then let the truck sit for some time before driving and filling up again. If you keep the tank full then the tank won't produce condensation while it's sitting for any length of time. If your continuously driving the truck then you can let it get low and fill up all you want and condensation will be minimal or non existent, certainly not enough to worry about the parts rusting out or developing rust.
