Ford should go the SUV/Van route and make these seats quick release removable and also give the option to configure 1 seat, 2 seats, or all of them, whichever is necessary. Never thought about this before....
Only thing is on a SUV/Van you have to reconfigure the seats to load large items. On a truck you are expected to load cargo of dimensions that will not properly fit in the back seat area, in the dedicated-purpose cargo bed part of the vehicle.
Just had a thought. How insanely awesome would it be if there was a lockable storage area below the flat load floor. Man now im just dreaming.
The RAM offers that as a feature. Well it's not lockable, and appears to be made of plastic, but it's a storage area anyway.
The XL trim level superduties don't come with the storage tray by default. I find that with the carpet delete, the rear floor space is reasonably close to being flat.
First, the part is #606A28. The same load floor has been in use since, I believe, 2003, but was discontinued for 2012. The hex-head bolts used for the plastic storage compartment also work for the load floor (and they are m12x1.75 with a 13 mm hex head if you need to replace them). Note that you may have a tab on the front of the load floor that bears on the carpet and needs another bolt, but you don't see the hole for it; that hole is just carpeted over, so make a small cut, find the hole, and if it isn't threaded then tap it (a few trucks are coming through with the hole but without tapping).
The drilling pattern hasn't changed in all those years, but I've seen a couple very early ones that had 6-inch high fold-out feet. Almost every one out there, however, has the standard 3-inch high feet; just check before you buy a used one that you're getting the 3-inch version. It can be wrapped up in a bunch of cut up corrugated cardboard and shipped by UPS. The wrapped load floor weighs about 34 lbs and cost me $75 to ship all the way across the country by UPS ground. The going price for a used one in very clean condition seems to be about $100 plus shipping. The storage compartment seems to get a better price than the load floor, oddly enough.
If it's scratched up, you can refinish it easily. LineX (suggested above) is not the answer because it is too thick and prevents the unit from folding and hinging properly. Instead, take it to a powdercoating shop and have it stripped and then powdercoated. You can get a thousand colors so you can match any part of your truck you want, but for sheer durability I'd suggest a powdercoated hammertone to match your carpet. I paid less than $100 for the stripping and re-powdercoating, but I did use a color the shop had in stock; if they need to order a color, it gets a lot more expensive.
If you're getting the storage compartment, a word of warning: The key on the storage compartment lock is your ignition key, so if you get the compartment from someone else's truck you'll have to go into Ford to get a replacement lock or have the current one rekeyed. It isn't much security when your ignition key can open that storage locker (same problem with the center console), so you can't exactly trust that if someone takes your key to drive the truck, they can't get at whatever you're carrying there.
If you're going the opposite direction (to the load floor), you'll have a 12 volt outlet in the storage compartment that doesn't have a home on the load floor. Just disconnect the electrical connector from the outlet assembly, tape it over well with electrical tape, and tape it to the underside of the load floor so it doesn't get damaged.
Man! I can't believe the flat load floor isn't available in the 2012's! What a nice option.
Glad I found this thread. My bud just picked up a 2009 CC Lariat and has the load floor but he wants the Du-Ha. Hopefully he'll let me have the load floor.
In the next 6-12 mo's I should be in the market for a used '12 or '13 CC and I'd prefer the load floor option.
Another thing I always wondered is why cant they make a modular seat like a previous poster suggested. How awesome would it be if you could fold the rear seat back down to lay completely flat, fold the seat bottom up to expose either the load floor or the storage bin, or pop a lever and pull the seats out all together? Man that would be awesome!!
