U Joints?

Vehicle: 2000 Ford F150 Supercab 4X4 4.6L V8 77K

Problem: When I start backing up in my truck I hear a "pop" or "loud bang" come from somewhere in the mid to rear of the truck, does anyone know what this could be or maybe is it a universal joint somewhere? Any help would be appreciated.

Rear brake shoes popping loose ? ( if you have drum brakes). Some issues with certain linings sticking to the drums.

No it's disc brakes in the rear, doesn't seem to be the issue.

possible that its u joints, or you could have something damaged in the rear end. I have been through a couple 8.8 rear ends.

Also could be the slip yoke. They can dry up and cause a poping noise. Applying proper grease to the splines takes care of it usually.

Id check u joints first. There are two of them on the drive shaft.

Block your wheels.

Climb under your truck and see if you can see any movement in the u joints when you push on the driveshaft on the ends. There should be no play at all. Absolutly zero movement. and dont be afraid to push on it hard, it can take some force to get them to move sometimes, if they are bound up. I usually put it in neutral to check them.

OK, since it's not the brakes, ditto on the above. Usually, when the u-joints are bad enough to cause that much of a knock when you put it in gear and go one way or the other, there is quite a bit of metal missing internally. You should see the equivalent of metal filings around the u-joint's cups. The filings used to be your needle bearings.

I just pulled out the rear driveshaft to do the u joint job and ATF came out of the high end (where it goes into tranny), is this normal?

Unfortunately, yes. Sometimes, a rag tightly packed in there will slow or stop it, sometimes you can buy a plastic slide in plug just for this.

Put New U-Joint in closest to the rear axle and didn't hear or feel anything when backing up, we'll see how it is after driving it for a few days. The u-joint closest to the transmission seemed good.

All fixed, the hardware on the parking brake failed and was dragging inside of the rear right disc brake. Very happy man now.
