I have a 2000 F-150 4X4 with 80K. Every once and a while when I am backing up I hear a clunk or bang that feels like something just came unstuck. I have checked the brakes and its not them, I have 4 wheel disc anyway. But what happens that weird's me out is it feels like the truck doesn't want to move back anymore after this happens until I (in my opinion) give it more gas then I think I should to get it going again. Then it may happen again it may not for two days. I replaced one of my U-Joints and checked the other so I have ruled them out, what else could this be?
Still at it I see ? With disc brakes in the rear, it's more than likely the e-brake shoes causing the problem. The hardware tends to corrode away, and if the main lower springs goes, the shoes will drag hard against the interior drum of the disc brake rotor. Can't really check them without pulling the rotor. First try the e-brakes. Do they seem to release ? They are easy to replace, once you get the rotor off.
Sort of back to your original issue, and a variation of my first thing to check I guess.
I had my wife back up the vehicle and noticed that the right rear wheel locked up when I heard the noise....Called Ford dealer they said pull the brakes apart and look at it.
YES! all fixed, the hardware failed inside there. Cost me 24 for the parking brake shoes for both wheels and 24 for the hardware for both wheels. I am very happy, thanks for all the help!
It's a pretty common problem because rear pads/calipers can be serviced without necessarily removing the rotor. Most trucks probably get a couple of brake lining changes before this problem crops up.
