CPS replacement / wrap exhaust

Hello to all, I am new here but I have been reading your treads for about 6 mths. You guys and girls have tons of knowledge on this subject so please help.
first I have a E99 F350 cc 2wd drw 8ft bed with 198,000 and I got it a few mths ago with 196,000 And it is bone cold stock down to the ujoints. Hard to believe but true! Now it is on jack stands in the garage getting a K/N stock box, MBRP 4" turbo back, new brakes front & back, flush P/S, coolant, rear diff, brake fluild, trans, oil&filter,
The CPS was replaced by dealer/warr. at 120,000. I am wondering with the problems with the CPS how long are they good for? Should I worry? I am taking the family on a trip from IN to FL in 3 wks.
Second I am going to wrap the down pipe. I want the exhaust gas to stay hot and moving. I know some you don't believe in that school of thought but it works and keeps egt's down too. I hope that is true with the 7.3 too I know this because back in the 90's I played with Turbo coupes 2.3 turbo/ Mustang SVO But my question is how far should I wrap the down pipe and why? I was thinking about 2 ft down from turbo.
Any input would be helpful. I am new to the 7.3 turbo diesel. Actually any diesel I don't know much but I am learning. Gas engines I know a thing or 2.

Welcome to FTE. There haven't been too many reports of the new CPS failing, but since they're only $25, I'd pick up a spare and carry it with you. You can change it on the side of the road in no time if you have to.

I'm not real sure you need to wrap a 4" exhaust pipe with hardly any restriction in it. I don't think you'll really gain anything in terms of EGT's, but if you do it, let us know how it works.

As for the K&N. If you use it, pay very close attention to the intake for signs of dirt ingestion. We've seen many turbo's and even engines here get dusted from a K&N.

Thanks for the insight. on the CPS and I have heard that about the K&N but I think that could be if not oiled correctly. We will see. The wrap job isn't in stone yet I am in the thinking stage(DANGER) but I was also thinking about the heat tranfer to firewall. If I do it I'll keep you up to speed if it works.

Heat wrap may not be a bad idea,my wife complained about the floor being hot after I installed the 4" exhaust but she always complains about something

The issue with the drop-in K&N is fitment. You want to ensure the filter seals up good and tight against the upper air box lid. Some have reported the filter element does not seal well and allows air to get sucked into the system post filter. Resist the urge to remove the air box lid without first removing the rubber air intake tube. This will help ensure that you get the lid tabs inserted positively and the seal will be better. Also beware for warped lids, if yours is warped then you should have it replaced or upgrade to an A.I.S. Both items are available from PartsGuyEd.

These engines are air hungry so the filter will get dirty quick. You will want to clean it often. I clean mine every oil change (6k miles or so...). I probably over oil but I don't care since there isn't a MAF to worry about.

Great input !! On the 03 6.0 how far did Ford wrap the down pipe that will give me at least an idea of what Ford was thinking. And as far as the wife comment I feel for you my wife likes me even less now that I got this truck. Cause if I am not on this website I out in the garage working on my truck. BUT I LOVE MY TRUCK !!!!

Old gasser shade tree method; spray paint the tubing (not hi temp header paint, of course) allow to dry, then run it as it will be used. Wrap the area where the paint burned off.
I think that's about as scientific as something like that needs to be.

On the subject of the spare cps, make sure you get it from ford, international or riffraff diesel. The new gray one is about $25 at ford dealer. Riffraff sells the original black one for $45 i think.

On the 2003 6.0 there is sound/heat insulation from right after the band clamp all the way down to where the CAT is, so about the transmission cross member.

The bumper is Road Armor.
