I know this subject has been brought up numerous times. Ive done a search but I get all kinds of different ways and opinions on how to do it.
Has there been a thread started with pics and parts list info? What I need to know is the cheapest way, and easiest way to do this conversion. OH my truck is a 75 F250 stock height, and no plans of lifting it.
I have heard tale you can use a chevy gear box. what years and what else would I need to get?
I don't want to spend a fortune doing this swap because this truck is just going to be used as a farm truck, and I can't stand the large steering ratio this power ram has.
Thanks for info and sorry for bringing up this subject again.
the chevy steering box mounts outside the frame. if keeping the factory push/pull steering design, you could use a 4x4 chevy box, but i think there is a clearance issue inside the wheel well. I tried that once and didnt look like it was going to work. Maybe with more ingenuity it could work. Most people use a 2wd chevy box so they can reclock the pitman arm and use crossover steering, but im not sure there is enough clearance with the leaf springs on a stock truck. another common option is a 78 or 79 3/4 ton 4x4 ford box, but it does require some fabrication. You might also be able to use a 1/2 ton or bronco box. most people dont but i think they are looking for a strength upgrade for larger tires. You might get by with it on a stock truck. good luck.
I used a 70's vintage chevy box , an olds rag joint & intermediate shaft . The tie rod from the chevy box on one end & a ford tie rod on the other . Shimmed the angle of the box with a bracket welded to the frame to provide the correct angle .
The lines from the pump were the same
Later on I shortened the arm on the axle to tighten the turning radius .(removed an inch and a half)
Mine are 31x 10.5 & a fairly standard height Truck . A little added re curve to the front springs to level the truck ..
No rubbing ...Even with the fairly tight turning radius it now has . Steers like a car too. One finger while sitting still with the plow on it ...I also have a 79 steering column that has a little smaller wheel ..No effort steering .
My truck is stock height, but it has 33x11.50x 16.5 all round. I think the two drive chevy box is going to be my route since I already have the box, I can drill and weld.
Can you guys post up a picture of the linkage going from box to the axle. I'm the type that can read on something all day, but once I see a pic, I can go do it.
