I am getting ready to install the drivetrain in my 52 f1. 1988 302 with 1966 4 barrel intake and headers. 1980 c4. No rear yet but in estimate that it will be something like a 3:00 or 3:25.

I have the starter ring and front balancer from the 88 engine. The starter I now have is from the 1980 transmission. Will this starter work?

Also, will the torque converter from the 1980 c4 be the best for this setup.

Thanks, Les Witt

It should all bolt together. The critical parts to keep together is the harmonic balancer and the flex plate/starter ring. Those two are balanced together - 50 OZ imbalance. The rest aren't as specific.

Only other thing you might run into is the diameter of the flex-plate. There were 157 tooth and 164 tooth rings for those years. They're just about 1" different....if memory serves me right they measure 13.25" and 14.25" across the teeth. If your starter mounting plate is for the big one and you use the smaller flex-plate the starter can't reach the teeth.

I can't remember when they changed the imbalance as long as the flex plate imbalance matches the engine you will be fine. I would think the starter would be for the 80. As far as the rear, in my 66 Mustang has a 289 4 bbl with C4 and 3.00 to 1 rear and at 70 it turns almost 3k rpms. So either will work well for you.
