Sensor Sequence???

Someone give me the sensor sequence as the PSD 96-97 7.3 cranks & fires.

PCM controls everything; correct? Then what ignites the others? Got to be a sequence for the others. ICP, IPR, CPS & etc. If there are others, please advise!!

PS Trying to place some info in my head when I am faced with problems, now & in the future.

Cps reports that the engine is turning over . PCM reads ICP & tells IPR what it wants based on TPS .. Fuel volume is controlled based on (mainly) EOT ...

On my 97; I have to unplug the ICP to get it to run; runs on about 6 cylinders: so, if I understand correctly: the PCM starts reading the ICP & trys to tell the IPR what to do, but if the IPR is defective; wrong signals are received; the defective regulator sends the wrong fuel pressure to the injectors; causing it to run rough.

Close or no cigar???

Thanks Tater50

Unplugging the ICP sensor makes the PCM assume ICP , at idle it will assume aprox 724, it also uses other inputs to guess . Have you pulled the valve covers & look at the oil spill spouts while cranking ?..

If you unplug the icp thqt 1means the sensor is bab 2 means the computer hqs to guess what the pressure actually is. It wont make the truck lose cylinders that is a problem with the under vale cover wire harness it sounds like you have two issues goin on at the same time. If its automatic does the transmission shift hard?

The fuel pressure stays constant no matter what. The regulator "ipr" regulates the oil pressure going to the injectors to make them fire harder

Sitting 3 years

97 has been sitting 3 years.
Could only get started w/ICP unplugged; ran rough
Could only get 20 MPH; so trans did not shift

So, what I am looking at: should unplug all sensors & make sure all these connections are clean.

Rick: will remove the IPR first, since I have another one & eliminate that potential problem. Removal of Valve Covers?? Have not done that yet; will do the above first.

Iallwork: thanks will take a look at that.

89Ford73: thanks for the input

Been a gas guy for a long time; love the diesels: this is good info. My 97 is not a MUST GO right now; it is just a project/parts truck, but I think with you guys help, I will get it running.

It looks like the best starting procedure for a truck that has been sitting for a long time: is to make sure ALL electrical connections are clean; fuel is clean; batteries are charged. I have not cleaned ALL connections; that is the first thing I will do when the weather permits; then proceed.

With Rick's & others help: knowing the starting/running sequences is vital in determining the defective parts. Would be a real head scratcher if you do not know the sequence.
