Question 94 F-350 460 Tachometer problem?

Hey guys, I got a problem with my old truck I was hoping you could help out with.

A while back I noticed the tachometer started going wonky on me.... When idling it shows about 200 rpm (the truck idles smoothly at normal rpm around 900 I think and runs perfectly) then when you get around 2-3K rpm seems to work somewhat normally, then above 3,000 rpm, the tach shoots off the scale and goes all the way over to 5,000 rpm. Once it shifts and the rpm comes down, the tach settles down where it is about right between 2-3K rpm, and when cruising at about 1500 rpm it goes back down close to 0 again...

The truck runs normally, it would just seem that some part of that system is sending a bad signal or something... Any ideas on what it might be? How does the Tachometer work on this truck, it is electronic correct?

The truck has about 195,000 miles on it and all in all its still a VERY good running, reliable truck. I just don't drive it as much as I have the much more comfortable Super Duty now as my main vehicle.

Thanks guys

I think what happens is that the gauge gets dirty and sticks some, so it doesn't read right.

I have seen a failing coil cause tac problems similar to yours but not quite as bad.

I do not have an answer for you. Just wanted to say that you got a sharp looking truck there.

Hmmm... The truck still runs fine though, not sure if it could be that considering....

Thanks!! The pic is a few years old, but other than needing a good detailing, it still looks pretty much the same.

I just purchased a 93 F350 XLT crew that is having a similar problem except at times my tac will be at zero during Idle nad then as the truck revs it jumps off the other end redline. Also My Fuel gauge is wacky some times it shows empty and then jumps to where it might be close but It seems to never be trustworthy. It makes me question all of my gauges

The factory tachs in the older Rangers and alot of other 80s-90s Ford vehicles can have these problems with the tach.

my suggestion is try to find another cluster that could possibly work...plug it in and if it works fine then id put that cluster in (be careful in some states its illegal..it is in mine if u sell the vehicle) but i think there is a way to just replace the tach part not positive on that one tho

The coil was on its way out on my Ranger for quite a while, my tach jumped all over the place. On the day the truck finally started running like real crap, I replaced the coil, tach has been working perfectly ever since.
