After reading all of this, I don't believe the DRL's are 1/2 voltage.... I believe they run at 90%. There is very little difference in brightness between my DRL's and the low beams at night.
Just reviving this thread as I had the transmission TSB done today and while there, the dealer turned on my daytime running lights as well (for free). Calling the insurance company tomorrow to knock a couple of bucks off the premium.
I had mine turned on for free at my dealership near Sacramento, CA. It took them about 5 minutes to get a technician with the laptop and turn them on. The lights seem significantly reduced in power compared to the "normal" headlights.
What I don't like is that the mirror marker lamps are also turned on - the tail lamps aren't on, which is good, but I still don't like the mirror markers on. I had mine turned on for the insurance discount too. Otherwise, I would care less.
