427 Oil filter adapter

The 390 oil modifications that I've seen suggest using a 427 oil filter adapter instead of the stock 390 one... does anyone have a part number for that item, or know which year to look for, and what car should it have come from, since they didn't put em in trucks as far as I know. I talked to my local Ford dealer, and he gave me a part number for 1965-67 Mustang 427, but he wasn't sure if it was what I needed for this 390 or not, so I told him I would check with the expert panel to make sure first. Hopefully somebody on this forum will know. Here's the number: COAZ6881A. Thanks.

Is this for your truck? If so, use the stock "straight out" adaptor, it flows just as good as the one you're looking for, maybe better because it has two less right-angle turns.

The 427 adaptor design was incorporated in the later plain jane C8 adaptors. Don't waste your money on something that says 427.

That "6881" part is what I used in my Hi-Boy, and it works great! The 90* allows me to pre-fill the filter when I change it, and it doesn't drip nearly as much oil when it's removed either. Don't be faked out by the 427 part number, it's what replaced the earlier ones for all FE's. Steve

I don't think the 90* adaptor will work in a 4x2 truck, the filter will hit the front crossmember.

It's definitely a 4x2 truck... What to do?

Use the truck adaptor, it's not a problem.

I've added a remote oil filter (amsoil dual remote) to one of my vehicles (1998 ZX2) and will probably add one to my F-100 if I ever get rid of the oil leaks. You can choose the location and make it very easy to reach (not that the filter on a truck is hard to reach). You can also orient the filters vertically so that you can pre-fill (if you are so inclined). Of course I would not use it unless it has the threaded AN fittings, as I would not trust the oiling system of any vehicle to worm clamps. FWIW the remote filter mount adds some extra capacity to the system depending on how long your hoses are.

I cracked the straight filter adapter when I was putting in my 390, I had a spare 90 degree adapter and it physically fits, but I could not get the filter on it, the crossmember is in the way. I had to hunt down another straight one to work in my 1967 F250 4X2. I don't think the 90 degree adapter will work on the 4X2 trucks, you can try but it will probably be a waste of time and money, stick with the straight filter adapter.

I agree with Barry. The later model adapter that sets the filter sideways will work just as well. Chamfer the holes in the block and adapter to make match eachother. At least make sure there are no walls for the oil to run into. This is not necessary but is possibly a minor improvement. Also the FL1A filter and many of its clones have an anti-drainback valve in them so you do not have to worry about oil draininig out of the filter overnight.
