while were sorta on it.. what is the difference in a cast 390 or a cast 427 crank ? If they are both cast and the same throw, what's the reason for classifying one a 427 ?
Bobby "IF" I'am not mistaken, the 427 crank was a forged cast Iron crank, and the 390 was just a cast crank... Altho I dont know much about the history of the 427's..as I could never have afforded one....I think thats the diffence...JMO
On the C4AE-B crank you have it was used in both the 427 and 390. Most popular books and sites list it as a 427 part. But was used in both. It's a cast iron crank. The forged cranks Russ is thinking about are forged steel. Those started in the high riser engines in 64 and then carried over to the 65-67 MR's. 68 427's went back to the 2U cast iron cranks.
LOL.. Thanks for the correction on that G, I really wasnt sure....and just took a stab at it....But I know now!!! LOL... Thats what I get for not knowing my numbers on parts.... I should have put in a dis-claimer....lol
No problem glad I could help. With all the FE cranks and some inaccurate listings it gets confusing. Some of the early cast iron 427 cranks have the grooved mains feature carried over from the 406. Those are easy to spot. So there are some 427 only applications on some of the cranks.
