Need some help....

I bought a 1970 LTD XL that had a 390 in it for a replacement motor in my 1967 F250. The question I am asking is, in the trunk was a pair of FE heads one I can identify it is a C7AE-A with the Mustang ,Fairlane exhaust bolt pattern, the other one I cannot find any info on, it is a C1AE. The head has way bigger intake ports than the C7AE-A head and my extra pair of C8AE-H heads but the valves look the same size. I have looked into How to build Big Block Fords by Steve Christ, but I can find anything about this head. Does anybody here know what this C1AE head is??????

C1AE is the early style FE head. It has the tall (as you noticed) intake ports, 73 - 76cc D style combustion chambers and the raised exhaust ports. Compare the C1 exhaust to the C7 and C8 heads, you'll see the whole port is raised higher. This is where some header manufacturers get into trouble. They design their ports to match the earlier raised style. The C7 head has the same D shape combustion chamber though, the C8 has the later style 68 - 71cc kidney bean chamber.

The C7 (and C8 for that matter) 14 bolt exhaust patterns won't bolt up to the stock logs.

Would it be worth it to hunt down another C1AE head and have them rebuilt and put them on my 390. The heads on it now are a mismatched set 1 is a C6AE-J and the other one is a C6AE-L. Will the C1AE heads give my 390 more HP and Torque or would it be a waste of my time and money?

Hunting down another C1AE head may be a challenge. Depends what you want out of your motor, the big port heads will flow more at high rpm and make more hp but the smaller port heads do great as far as torque and low rpm throttle response. For a truck I’d stick with the smaller port jobs. Don’t sell those small port heads short, Ford went to a lot of trouble to make it flow well.

The C6AE-J and L heads are the same AFAICT. I’ve seen engines come that way stock.
