Long story long - it is time for the '02 Navigator to get its annual Ziebart respray. I always take the spare tire out of it's storage place so they can do a good job of spraying.
I lowered the tire down disconneted it from the cable and wound the cable back up - except the cable seemed to jamb in the 'winch' with about a 1.5' of cable to go.
Can't wind the cable up, and, can't wind the cable down! Ended up pulling the 'winch' off the truck and put it in the vice. Seems like there is a couple of gears in the winch and the cable feels like it is caught in the gears.
The whole unit is riveted together so its gonna be a chore to open it up. Anybody have any experience like this or suggestions on how to get the cable working again? Or know what other donor vehicles would have the same 'winch'.

Expedition, Aviator, Explorer and Mariner all look the same to me. I have seen several with the cables cut and probably for the same reason as yours.
If you do get it freed up you may find that the cable is ruined and it will cost more than a new (used) one. Just call some salvage yards and make them unroll it all the way and retract it before paying for it.
I see this alot being in the tire biz. Try pulling on the piece that holds the wheel while having someone else crank the assembly, you might have to put it back on the truck. Without any weight on the cable it must jump off track. If you can get it moving wind it all the way out, then have a friend crank the mechanisim while you pull down on the cable providing some resistance. Good luck, if this dont work try drilling out the rivets and see whats going on inside.
Just want to thank Moto Mel, tr simmons, and I fish for your advise and sugestions. I ground the rivets off this morning and opened up the unit. Hey - there's alot of parts in there! Looks like I must have let too much cable out when I was pulling the spare tire out of there and I don't see any kind of stop.
I think that when the cable was all the way out it appears that it tried to wrap around the spool in the wrong direction and put a nasty kink tn the cable. The kink doubled over and got wedged between the spool and the wall of the unit. It is nigh impossible to straighten a kinked cable so the unit is now scrap. I've called around to a half dozen yards and no one has an '02 or earlier Navi or Expy. And none of the ones on flea bay look quite like mine so I'll keep looking.
Have you considered getting some new cable from Home Depot or Lowes?
That might be a last resort - there is what looks like maybe a plastic brake shoe in there that might be there to keep a drag on the spool to keep the tire from dropping down - dun no, but it is now in two pieces, and some of the grooves in the spool where the cable winds around are chewed up also.
I stopped at my friendly Lincoln dealer yesterday - new unit lists for $189!! He did tell me that '98 through '02 Navigators and Expeditions use the same unit. I had seen an '02 Blackwood unit on the net, but his computer said the '02 Blackwood unit is different. So I suppose the F-150's are different also.
There is a yarde near Buffalo where my son lives and we have seen a few Expys in there so I might give them a try next week.
