I'm looking for a tailgate for a 1951 F2 pickup. Some catalogs show one for an F1, but I believe that would be too narrow. Am I right? What years and models would fit this? Does anybody know who sells new ones? Does anybody have a good used one? Thanks, Dave
The Express 8' bed used on F-2 and F-3 models was the same from '48 to '52. The gate is taller and wider than an F-1 gate, and nobody reproduces them. Finding a used one in good shape takes some looking. If nobody here steps forward, watch ebay. Also the larger swap meets around the country are good places to look. I found a near perfect one a few years ago at Iola. Stu
I found a near perfect on at Jefferson a couple years ago for $35. The trick is to find some one who bought a nice one for their F-1 without know what it's for. That's how I got the I have. They're out there but you have to look, scour all the swap meets you can, Craigslists and eBay, one will turn up.
That's a much better deal than I got, but I'm glad I found mine. So many are bent up or rusted in this part of the country. I've got one on a truck that I hauled home from Arizona (Phx area) that is even rusted. But like you say, they are out there and rust can be fixed. Stu
there is a guy named adolph on cl(no its not the bad one)909 217 4391 on the la county area,he says hes got a bunch of parts,,,you could call him and have him measure the tailgate
Has anyone given any thought to modifying an F-1 tailgate?
You could easily cut the outer flange off and add some flat sheetmetal to stretch it. To make it look right you might have to cut the tailgate between each of the raised panels and add a bit of material betwteen them. The outer flange shouldn't be too bad, either build it from scratch or just add pieces to fill in the original.
From the drawings it looks as if the three raised panels are a bit larger overall for the express bed, so, my idea of "stretching" an F-1 gate would probably come out looking out of proportion.
Yes, Bobby, the gates are larger in every way, including the raised panels. You'd have to cut each section into quarters and add a plus shape into all three sections, in addition to working around the Ford script in the middle. Waaaay too much work. ;-)
I have two of them, but they are both really beat up....one is cracked across the bottom & the other is intact, but not in good shape. That is one of the reasons that my F2 is becoming an F1 project. I'll take a look tonight and try to get a picture if it's not raining!
