Hi I'm a new Excursion owner. I purchased an 05 Excursion LTD with the V10 with 49k on it for $23,000. This website seems an excellent place for support and advice. I was told by my mechanic that these motors have problems with spark plugs breaking when they are changed at 75 to 80k miles and I should upgrade the plugs now. Is this ligit advice or bs? Any other things I need to know to avoid trouble down the road? I plan on keeping this truck long term as my wife, four kids and I just love this vehicle. Thank you for any input you can give me.
I own a 2003 X V-10...and as of now its at the dealer getting the thread in the heads for the spark plugs re threaded..i blew 2 spark plugs out of the heads with a huge bang..scared the hell out of me...thought i blew the motor up...found this site by google'ing the problem ...this site has several right ups on the problem..found out there is a kit to use to fix the problem without actually taking the heads out to be re-done....I would seriously take your mechanics advice and change the spark plugs...i hit the 120k mile mark when my plugs blew..hope this helps
The only other thing is the exhaust manifold studs breaking. You can do search on here and in the V10 forum and you'll find tons of write ups on the topic. Congrats on the new vehicle.
If you do change out the plugs, I would stick with the Ford ones, It seems like many have had problems with other brands, especially Bosch, if I recall correctly. If not, someone please correct me! Welcome to the X club
I put Champion Truck Plugs in my friends 2000 Excursion V-10 at 110k. The factory plugs that came out were worn, but not in terrible shape. It took some force to break the plugs loose, but I made sure to apply slow steady force instead of jerking on the ratchet. New plug went in with a dab of copper anti-seize and dielectric grease in the boots.
(just my experience, I'm sure everyones is different)
Hey Thanks for all the input. This is a great site. You people really know and love your trucks! I will be checking out a lot of the threads for info in the future.
