What does the power steering pump sensor do?

My power steering pump sensor (if that is what it is) sprung a leak the other day out of the top so I plugged it with a bolt.

What does it do? Is it important? Will it set off a CEL?
Thanks everyone!

The PS switch is supposed to kick up the idle RPM on the 5.0L engine when the power steering pump pressure rises above a set point. I am not certain if it will trigger a code in CM but it will will trigger a code during the KOER tests.
