I'm considering buying a 2000 explorer sport 4X4. Has around 150K, i took it for a drive and it ran good and all that, then pulled into an empty parking lot to do some sharp turns in it, and when i turned, the whole vehicle rocked from side to side throughout the circle. I don't know a whole lot about much, but it didn't feel right to me, so i didn't buy it that day. Thought I'd get on here and ask if that was normal, or maybe something to stay away from? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have a manual 4wd or an automatic 4WD. If manual, unlock 4x4. If automatic, don't do sharp turns like that, you are confusing the AWD system. You are driving an Explorers, a big bulky top heavy SUV, not a low sleek sports car. They will handle differently. I would not consider the rocking to be abnormal for that type of vehicle.
I thought Khan had it pegged.. symptom sure sounds llike wheels trying to turn different speeds on a sharp turn. rocking or jumpy motion is normally 4 x 4 engaged.
Its also somewhat normal with a limited slip. My Dad's Dakota will do the same thing turning sharp even in 2WD simply because the limited slip doesn't like to turn that sharp.
Well to say that you shouldn't try that. Didn't you remember about explorer with recalled firestone tire?
Explorer are PRONE to roll over on tight turn like you attempt to do. I am surprised Owner didn't say anything like that. If I were seller I wouldn't let you drive like that on my vehicles.
Until you was roll SLOW and turn tight. Then I understand clearly. It probability stuck in 4wd.
He didn't say he was doing high speed sharp turns . The Explorer fiasco, just like the Bronco II roll-over BS was caused by owner/operator failure, either from lack of proper maintenance (tire pressure), overloading or driver error/inexperience with SUV characteristics. You can't idiot-proof anything, including vehicles! Friggin lawyers were the biggest problem with the Explorer issue!
You want to worry about Explorer roll-overs watch the videos in the first post of this thread.
It does sound like the 4wd was still engaged though.
A properly functioning limited slip won't hump like that either (Dad better have it looked at). I've had quite a few L-S equipped vehicles and never got the hump from one of them. I have a friend with a spool in his tubbed 56 and even it doesn't hump. It'll chirp his huge tires in a turn though.
