Hi, I would like to know if anyone knows how to replace the key switch in the steering column of a 1986 F-150 4x4. The one in my column is going bad. Thank you, Ernie.
The key goes into the "lock cylinder", which isn't a switch. To remove it from a tilt column, put the key in & turn it to the RUN position, push the small pin just below & behind the key, then pull the key & cylinder out. When you put a new one in & turn it off, it pushes the pin back out and locks itself in. On NON-tilts, you have to pull the steering wheel to get to the pin, but the rest is the same.
The ignition switch is mounted to the R side of the steering column above the pedals behind the removeable panel under the column, and is connected to the lock cylinder by a 3/32" pushrod running down the column inside the plastic cover.
