Got a 79' Bronco with a 351M and it seems to have a lifter tick, oil pressure gauge doesn't work,(just my luck). What should I go about doing? Is there an easy fix for this or am I screwed?
Lifter tick could be caused by a couple of things. Sticking lifter, worn cam lobe, worn pushrod or rocker arm. It is also common on the 351M motor with no ill affects from it, if it's a mild tick. I would try an oil change with 5w30 and a can of seafoam for about 1500 miles, then another oil change to 20w50 unless you live someplace cold then go to 10w40. The other choice is to get it narrowed down and change out parts. Have to take your milage into account versus cost of repair.
what oil filter are you running on the motor? Fix the oil pressure gauge to know what is truely going on. use a broom stick and place it on the motor/valve covers etc to try and locate the noise.
I would run a Delo or Rotella 15w40 diesal grade oil.
I live in Fl and it's hardly cold here so think oil won't be a concern, I'll try to change it today or tomorrow, I just picked up a motorcraft oil filter. For some reason everyone says they work great, it's got a fram on it now. The tick's pretty loud, I mean, it's really noticeable. I've heard slick 50 sometimes takes away the tick but I'd rather not 'jerry rig' something as serious as that.
Motorcraft, if I remember right, have a provision in them that keeps oil in your engine so you don't have dry starts. Fram's don't.
When I got my '81 (300 6) it ticked terribly. Found that all the lifters were completely collapsed and filled with so much crud from old oil and infrequent changes that they were stuck in their fully pressed position (so they weren't putting any pressure on the push rods). Made for a lot of noise when those push rods bounced around.
New lifters fixed it.
My mechanic buddy told me to put half a quart of ATF in the engine and let it run for a while and see if that'll clear it up. If not then it's new cam and lifters for me!!
Go for clean regular or semi synthetic motor oils first and (write it down guys) as g-k50 said change it like clockwork. Even go for short intervals at first to keep the oil clean and any deposits that come loose from being carried back into the engine. Kem is right about the filter as well but you said you have a Motorcraft filter for it so that shouldn't be an issue once it is in there. Full or semi-synthetics will help release sludge just as well as ATF and won't break down in the crankcase where ATF will be good for about an hour at full operating temp.
I just got the truck a couple weeks ago so I have no clue when the oil was changed last, i guess I was so excited to get the truck that I didn't even notice the tick haha. I'm gonna put some ATF in it today and then change the oil and see what happens. If it comes down to it, what would be the best cam/lifter combo to get? I was thinking about getting an edelbrock cam. Thanks again for the help.

when i had a 78 Bronc i put in the Edelbrock performer pkg. It sure woke that motor up! Also put the edelbrock intake on.
Did you use the intake/carb/cam pkg? I've always wanted to get that but I've never been able to save up the cash:/ It's only got a 2bbl on it now, it'll still spin the hell outa the 33's I got on it

Yes, i got the whole pkg and it was worth it. Good reliable power right thru the power band. i was debating at the time to do the 460 swap but never could find the right 460. Anyways there was no regrets, what a jump in power.
