RE: Tranny Guide in Tech Article section

To add something along the lines of what Derick mentioned: the E4OD replaced the C-6 in 1989, so we know the C-6 may have last been used by the factory in 88 or 89.

It has to be at least '89 because my '89 has C6. I hope I can replace it with E4OD.

RE: Tranny Guide in Tech Article section

Folks,

A couple of minor things;

1. Anybody with any definite updates/corrections to my information can simply post them here and I will eventually update the original to inlcude them. I would prefer you i.d. your source for any corrections though.

2. To date I have been contacted at my home email address by about 60 folks for copies of the original with the chart that is missing from the FTE version. That's fine, I offered to provide copies and don't mind doing it. I have had difficulty with a few people's mail systems - my response to their request keeps bouncing back. If anyone is still waiting for me to send it, they should contact me ( at home ) again as I always respond within 2 days and lack of a response menas I had trouble with your mail system the first time.

Regards,

The C-6 was used in Vans with the 300-6 until 96-97 Found out just the other day. My uncle has a plumbing bussiness with ford vans. He ordered 2 in 96 with a c-6 and 300-6 motor, Talk about reliable!!

RMF, thanks for the Tech Article! It's good to have a place to go to try and track down the proper Ford tranny ID.

A while back I saved these links to websites which I refer to off and on to try and keep it all straight. You might even have used one or both as a source for your article:

Ford Tranny ID Chart1

Ford Tranny ID Chart2

Rockledge,

Good links.

Yes, I used the first one in preparing my guide, but I was not familiar with the 2nd one.

Thanks,

The C6 was replaced by the E4OD in 1989 with some leftover/overstock C6's making it into production early that year I'm sure.
However, for fleet sales, the C6 was available on "special order" for quite some time and possibly now, but I am out of the loop now so am unsure if it is.
Fleet sale were 50 vehicles or more ordered, like U Haul, PG&E, Pacific Bell and such
When these fleets are sold used, there will be some C6's out there in newer trucks.

I preped some fleet sales vehicles with the C6 after 1989 and was told this from the fleet sales staff.

according to records/repair manuals and first hand, the C-6 was installed in both regular production and special order trucks, 4X4/4X2, F150-F super duties, up until 1996. Here is a 1996 transmission repair choice page from a 1996 Ford CD.

«1996 Bronco/F-Series Table of Contents»

Group 07: TRANSMISSION

² Section 07-01A: Transmission, Automatic, E4OD

² Section 07-01B: Transmission, Automatic, C6

² Section 07-01C: Transmission, Automatic, 4R70W

² Section 07-02: Transmission, Automatic, Cooling

² Section 07-03A: Transmission, Manual, M5OD

² Section 07-03B: Transmission, Manual, Model S5-47 ZF

² Section 07-05: Transmission, Automatic, External Controls

² Section 07-07: Transfer Case, 4x4 System, Service

² Section 07-07A: Transfer Case, Electronic Shift

² Section 07-07B: Transfer Case, Manual Shift

² Section 07-07C: Transfer Case, Heavy-Duty, Manual Shift

² Section 07-14A: Transmission Range (TR) Sensor

² Section 07-14B: Park/Neutral Position (PNP) Switch

² Section 07-14C: Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) Switch

The C-6 is not mentioned after 1996, I believe it is because of the modular engine finally killed it off.

Possible, vary possible.
They were too strong, modifiable and reliable to keep around for ever.
And actualy, the E4OD is the evolved version of the C6 as that's what they started with when they designed it.
Almost every thing on the C6 from the pump back, was almost the same as the original E4OD from the center support back, at least internaly.

And that's where a lot of C6 upgrade parts come from now.

The c-6 was still available in the F550 and up in 1998, I don't think it is available now as the auto for the new diesel is the torqueshift.
