Rear diff whine

03', 4x2, scab, 4.6L, 4sp, 200K

How many miles can an average owner expect to get from his rear diff?

So long as the oil is changed now and then, a long time. Having the oil break down can start a whine but you could have a wheel bearing talking to you.

and you probably have the smaller 8.8 axle. 200k would be a believable milage if it has only had minor preventative maint.

As stated, could be a rear wheel bearing. Could also be pinion bearing. Hows the fluid level?
