the newer bodies are water tight.
UPDATE FROM GERMANY:
had to rescue the wife off the side of 91, because the f____ing vw jumped time and munched all the valves. fortunately, the 1.8t only has 5 valves per cylinder. this car has become my nemesis however i shall prevail

That only lasts for a little while. Load something with rock in it and dent the edge of the tailgate it's not water tight any more. Give the tailgate latches some time to wear down and they won't grab it that tight. It's really just a matter of time until it stops working like it should.

My father usually. Never seen a dump truck get used before? They aren't exactly treated with reverence. Tailgates slam rocks do damage and stuff just generally gets worn down and dented.

Well, I now can attest to Aarons' trucks existence. Saw ya on the highway, it looked like you guys were just getting ready to move on, the VW on the flatbed. As I went by I knew I saw the chapter sticker on the rear window of the truck. I would've given you guys a toot but by the time that occurred to me I was at the top of the hill.
