nothing ever goes smooth with this truck lol.i was going to finish pulling the tranny today i pulled the inspection cover off and found the nuts on the torque conv. bolts were rounded off. so after throwing some stuff i walked away im not sure what im going to do other than do some cutting or get one of those nut splitters.no im not talking about my significant other btw.has this happened to anyone else before?im thinking about hunting down the person who worked on the trans last and kicking them in the cajones.
Mine were rounded off too. Good luck getting a nut splitter on them, because I couldn't. (6.9 w/C-6 tranny)
I ended up taking an old socket (metric on my truck) about one size smaller and hammering it onto the rounded out nut. Then I played hell finding replacements.
I think Rupe has a more accessible flexplate than the 91 and older trucks (including the C6 equipped). Older trucks with the separate flywheel and flex plate have the TC bolts hidden in a hole through the cast iron flywheel. Strip those nuts and you are - well screwed......
I would try the method of hammering one size smaller, and possibly try an imperial socket that is a "close" match since that might give you the tight fit you need.
you dont need to fit a ratchet. you just need one of the flat belt tensioner pieces on it. the slim jim type bar with the 3/8 drive ratchet end on it. that thing will get you into way more places then a ratchet could dream of.
I have a set of the craftsman bolt-outs (what they call the bolt/nut extractor). Its worked great on all kinds of rusted and rounded off crap. As long as you can get them started, they grab like hell and a ratcheting wrench will work when space is a premium.
ok its been a long time since i did tranny work obviously, how easy should the fly wheel turn when your taking the converter bolts out with out using a screw driver to stop the flywheel
It will definitely turn, I put a pair of vise grips on to keep it from turning, they hit on the block or whatever and keep it from turning.
Autozone carries similar tools to what is being described as well, they grab and dig in to the bolt head/nut and help you take them off. Won't work on left hand thread of course...
these are what you will need there sold at autozone but they are IRWIN tools.... i have the base set and the expansion set so 50 bucks invested and are impact safe.... also have the hex end so can be used with a wrench as well if i remember correctly
these are one of the tools i wouldn't skimp on this is a if all else fails tool... i searched and read a million reviews before deciding on this set i would hate to be relying on it to get the job done and break itself
well i finally got around to workin on my truck a few hours today,i have been busy with a new job so i have no time cause im working 6 days a week.so i tried getting the TC nuts off again i tried my hardest i really did but they were just too far gone.sooooo out came the sawzall i planned on replacing the TC anyhow now i have to.oh well now all i gotta do is drop the cross member and bellhousing bolts maybe in another week or 2
