head gasket?

We have in the low teen weather right now and I start it and notice a lot of white smoke...I look under it and there is a puddle of oil. I follow the oil and it runs up to the bottom of the head. Checked coolant level and its empty. Checked oil and it was thick and black. (Thick bc of the weather I assume) just did coolant flush and oil change. Oil pressure was running higher then normal after oil change. 15w40. Sound like I need to replace head gasket?

As in the rad is empty or just the overflow reservior???

New oil is dirty after 5 minutes of running.........welcome to diesels. 10W30 diesel oil would be better.

Which side is the oil leak...... did you really tighten the filter.......

Smoke could be just unburnt fuel if one or more GPs are not working........FYI the 7.3 GP controller can cycle up to 2 minutes to eliminate smoke......

Passenger side rear head. Filter is tight. Rad is empty. More white smoke then normal. Smelt fine

Pax side head is a known problem........there was a problem with the corner cooling cutouts on the head gaskets. Some members have just torqued up the heads with satisfactory results.

Studs. Waiting for mine to show in the mail from Summit. Not far off from the cost of replacement bolts, and supposed to fix the head gasket issues involved with the IDI motors.

Would a head gasket cause the oil to be more runny?

Well, if it's leaking out between the head and block, then the head gasket is more than likely the culprit.

What do you mean exactly by 'more runny'?

the only reason the oil would be more runny is if it got coolant or diesel fuel in it. But it would change color with coolant in it

Your coolant could be getting burned by the engine......
