[QUOTE=White Max;11577213]If you alter the belt routing a bit, the low mount tensioner setup will work satisfactorily without the need for an idler in place of the smog pump. The routing of the belt is as follows: from the crank pulley around the water pump pulley, to the ps pump, to the ac compressor, under the tensioner (not the idler), to the alternator, then back to the crank pulley. You won't use the upper idler pulley in this configuration. On a 5.0L, this routing will require a 93.7" or 94.0" belt (93.7" is best, but takes a little effort to get into place).
White Max has the solution. See the pictures ealier in this thread. This worked for me on a '96 E-350 w/ 5.8 351W. Tensioner mounted on the side. Belt length (after some experimentation) turned out to be 97.5". Some users might have "belt flap" issues at high rpm. This truck is a stock, low rpm hauler for me. I'm 99% sure the eliminator pulley mentioned at the beginning (page 1) of this thread will work on a 5.8 also. I'll raise a cup to White Max!

I have done exactly this on my truck. 94 f250 with 5.8. Ran the route exactly like you guys have said without the smog pump or replacement bracket and pulley, even not using the idler pulley, just like in your pictures. Using 97.5 inch belt.(tried a 97, wouldn't fit) Now, my problem is, my truck squeals real loud when i start it up then it goes away. I started a thread asking how to resolve this. Most guys are saying its the brand of belt i'm using, valuelast. Is this a problem u had? I have noticed that with this set up that the tensioner almost goes all the way back down to where it would sit without a belt and it bounces slightly when the engine is running. Is this normal? but like i said, i tried a 97 inch belt and it wouldn't fit.
I never bothered with the silly eliminator brackets on my truck. I just bought a shorter belt and so far I've never had it jump off, squeal or have an issue with the belt flapping to much but that's just me.
What is wrong with running the belt without the pump or eliminator bracket? I have an eliminator bracket, but I couldn't see any way to get it to fit. It bolted up under the alternator, but there was no other place to bolt it up so I just got a belt that fits without the bracket. It seems like it'll work just fine, just thought I'd ask.
