Interesting, I bought an F-150 5.4 new in 2002. Never had a problem like that. I changed the plugs at 100K miles and did not see any issues. I sold the truck a few years ago with 185K miles and the only problem I ever had was one coil corroded where it snapped on to the plug. I cleaned it and it worked great.
yeah its a luck of the draw kind of thing. my 5.4 expedition on factory plugs. it blew a sparkplug earlier this summer. it had 63k miles on it. it was repaired the same day with a helicoil and new plug/coil. it now has 67k miles and still on factory plugs other then the one new one.
if they become loose they make a loud noise, much like a exhaust leak but its pretty loud almost like a rod knock. my truck had this after the plug blew it makes no odd noises. if the perevious owners had known what to look for with the noise it could have been taken care of before it blew.
So you don't have replace the heads? How do you "take care of it before it happens"? By putting anti-seize and checking their tightness type of thing? or.... Thanks guys. And Happy Thanksgiving.
Hello everyone,
As you can see i'm new to the site. I'm wanting to get my wife into a 2000ish excursion to haul our four children safely around. After seeing how well they hold up in crashes I was sold. So Just want some input on if I'm not going to be towing anything is it dump to be looking at this rig? Mainly love the way they look, safety, all the reviews I've read of what a great vehicle they are. They are a little hard to find in my area but looking for a 2000 limited with 5.4 4x4. Thanks for your time.
Jeff
Jeff,
Excursions was only made from 2000-2005, so how about a 05 Eddie Bauer edition, 6.0, 4X4, fully loaded, just over 100 thousand miles? you can see a picture of it in my avitar and in my garage. Mine is for sale.

you dont have to remove the head in most cases. you just install a helicoil and the a new plug/COP. only took the shop a day and $400(i found the paper in the glovebox)
if a plug is loose, it will cause a nasty sound which i can best describe as a combo of a exhaust leak and rod knock. if you hear this, dont drive it...then go through and check the thightness on all your plugs and you should be able to catch it before it blows.

No one, including my self ever said it happened to every 5.4 or 6.8 ever made, it's more prone to happen in the early engines.
I have the 5.4 in my 98 Expedition (144K miles) and the 6.8 (132K miles) in my 00 Excursion and haven't had a bit of trouble with the plugs since I've owned them. That troubled me as well after purchasing them but quickly realized it wasn't as common as some may think. Even when I had my 98 F150 with 5.4, I didn't have any troubles.
We have an '03 2wd with the 5.4 and I think the engine is awesome, Great torque @ low rpm's and hp for the size of the vehicle. Right before it....we had a Chevy Suburban w/ 5.3 and talk about night and day. The day I test drove it..the salesman let me take it down to my wife's work to show her....On the freeway I opened it up a little on an empty stretch of freeway....I did a pull from 70-90 and it was still pulling good at the top end...it didn't feel like I was running out of power.
Before the lift and big tires my wife was getting 13-15 mpg (city no major gridlock traffic of course).
The only major problem I see/have is the loss of oil - no leaks....but I have read in other forums..that other owners (trucks & suv) with the 5.4, they have experienced this too. And no...there is no smoke blowing out of the tail pipe.
I bought my 2000 with the 5.4 last month with 177k miles on it. It runs good. One of the reasons why I bought it was I have a 99 E.B. Expedition with the 5.4l in it and that has served my wife & I VERY well with little issues. (vacuum hoses and a bad transfer tube) after owning it for 5 years and over 90k miles we put on it. Driving daily and across country it changed my mind on Ford as a company. I saw go for it but just make sure the truck wasn't abused. Anything good if abused will spoil it.

Sarge
Great looking truck Sarge. I think a 05 is going to be more than I can spend. Thanks

I believe that you will find that there wont be that much difference between a 2000-2003 in excellant condition and a 2005. Then there is the advantage of having one of those last year production which in the future will give it added value as these become harder and harder to find.
I have 2 prices on mine the payoff which is currently in the low 20's and the price with the updated sterio/nav/sirus radio/video with an updated dvd/gamer for the rear.
