I'm looking to convert my 2000 Excursion 7.3 with the 4r100 over to a manual ZF5/6, i've stumbled upon an add where the guy is selling his ZF5 with the transfer case for $600 out of his 2001 F-250, would this be compatible with my 2000 Excursion with the 7.3? Thanks!
As far as I know, when ford switched to the super duty body style in 1999, they switched to ZF6 and didn't use ZF5's anymore. I can be wrong, but I haven't found anything online that says otherwise. So assuming the transmission came from a 2001, it is a super duty, and if you have a 7.3 superduty excursion, it should bolt up. Not sure if the crossmember and other stuff was different, but it will bolt to the back of the engine.
Now if it is legitimately a zf5, then I would assume it came from an OBS (94-97 7.3) powerstroke. If that's the case, I am not sure it will bolt right up. I don't know if the bolt patterns were different on the back for the zf5/zf6 transmissions. Somebody who knows more may correct me but I would research that some more. But for $600, thats an excellent deal even if it needs to be rebuilt.

Oh I agree on the deal, I'd like to think that it could bolt up to mine seeing as how it's off of a F250, but I'd rather not spend $600 to find out I'm wrong
Well your response to the other guy is also confusing because the 5.4 is the V8. The V10 is a lot bigger. Neither have the same pattern as the powerstroke. As far as bolting up, maybe it could be modified, but who knows. I would pass. Also, I would post this in the superduty forum as this is the OBS powerstroke forum, so more people in that might be able to help you, although many here are also very knowledgeable.

Thats a good idea, I just might do that, I may have said V10 by accident, I'm not familiar too much with the gas motors of Ford
It has the 5.4 V10 in it according to the seller, I've been told that the transmission wouldn't fit mine with the 7.3
It doesn't matter if it is a 5.4L V8 or a 6.8L V10. Both of those use the Ford modular bolt pattern. It is not at all like the pattern on the 7.3L.

I know that it won't bolt up. If you spend $600 for this you'll find out I'm right.
Mark is wrong. many think they're an expert and like to give their opinion without the facts. take everything with a grain of salt. the superduty with 5.4 triton and 6.8 used a zf5 not a zf6 up to 2001. the small block ford zf5 have internal slave cylinder. the modular zf5 has external slave cylinder same as the zf6 not the external zf5. the slave twist in. the older zf5 external slaves have retaining clip.

I forgot about this thread completely lol. Almost a year later and I now have an Excursion with a manual transmission with the ZF6, got it freshly rebuilt from Joes Transmissions up in Butler PA, great guys. Truck runs perfectly fine, a lot of the work comes from the reprogramming of the computer.
