Hello everyone,
As you can see i'm new to the site. I'm wanting to get my wife into a 2000ish excursion to haul our four children safely around. After seeing how well they hold up in crashes I was sold. So Just want some input on if I'm not going to be towing anything is it dump to be looking at this rig? Mainly love the way they look, safety, all the reviews I've read of what a great vehicle they are. They are a little hard to find in my area but looking for a 2000 limited with 5.4 4x4. Thanks for your time.
Jeff
They are wonderful. but still a truck, and thus, do not handle like a car.
second, They get wonderful gas mileage, around 10 in the city or less depending. Just keep that in mind.
sounds like you know what your looking for. i dont know that the 5.4 is the greatest or easiest to find. dont be scared off by the V10. its a great motor and really there isnt much differant MPG wise between the 5.4 and 6.8 and you will enjoy the extra power if/when needed.
i have had 3 V10 4x4s, currently a '02 v10 limited 4x4 and i absolutly love it. i see around 10mpg average.
and yes they hold up great. my last '00 saved me from much injury in a wreck i had about a month ago...sadly she gave her life in that wreck.

Hey Jeff, Welcome to FTE. I primarily bought the Ex for me, but ended up being a family vehicle due to safety and the increasing amount of crazy people that seem to be inhabiting the earth these days. I fish, hunt, and camp, don't have a boat yet but working on it. Before we bought the Ex, I didn't do much hunting or fishing. I always did in high school but after that, not so much. So, you never know, maybe having the Ex will tap in to those parts of you and your family, never know. But, as I stated, I wasn't going to tow anything, haul anything, do anything outdoor like before buying the Ex, and I bought it, wouldn't say it's dumb at all buddy. Good luck in the hunt.
I had a 2002 F-150 Supercrew Lariat I bought new, that had the 5.4 engine. One of the most trouble free engines I've ever owned.
I have a 2004 Excursion 6.0...THE most troubled engine I've ever owned.
If the truck is just going to be a daily driver for the wife and kids and you NEVER foresee pulling anything, go gas. My diesel is the only Ex I have driven so I can't speak for the gas Ex owners, but I drove the 5.4 for many years and I love that engine.
The HUGE fuel tank is a plus also. I have been 725 miles on a tank .....
As stated earlier, I don't think it's dumb to get into an Excursion even if you don't plan on towing. I completely agree about the family safety concern. Whenever I know my wife is going to be taking the kids all over, I leave the X for her. The X is also the king of road trip vehicles. As far as engine choice, do a search for gas vs diesel and you'll have more reading than you can imagine. Good luck in the search!
Mine is an 04' 4x4 with the 5.4. I got a good deal on it and it was low mileage. I wanted the 6.8, but was worried about gas mileage. Looking back now, I should have bought the 6.8, as the mileage isn't that much different. But I can say, it's got plenty of power to tow the family around and has been in 2 front end accidents since I've had it and one almost totaled the jeep grand cherokee, and the other did total the pontiac G6, and I felt only a shove, and my 4 year old daughter was sitting in the 3rd row seat drinking her slurpee and had no idea we had even been in a wreck. They are great for safety.
The 5.4 4x4 is pretty hard to find compared to the 6.8, and I don't think the 2000 was available with the 5.4 and 4x4. I think it came later, like in 03? Mine has 4:10 gears with LS, and it pulls great. Good luck man, and let us know what you come up with.
You say now that you are not pulling but once you have an Ex you realize you can pull a large trailer compared to a mid sized SUV, because of this I would opt for the V-10, good luck.
Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I'm gonna hold out and find one. Also I was reading a review on another web site where a guys was complaining about his Ford motor blowing out the plugs and messing up the heads. Is this a common issue in a specific engine? Any insite is appreciated.

It's common with the 00-03's. 5.4 and 6.8. They fixed it in the 03' model year. It's something that can be fixed once it happens, but it's best to do your research now, and avoid it all together later.

Interesting, I bought an F-150 5.4 new in 2002. Never had a problem like that. I changed the plugs at 100K miles and did not see any issues. I sold the truck a few years ago with 185K miles and the only problem I ever had was one coil corroded where it snapped on to the plug. I cleaned it and it worked great.

Jeff, I also got the excursion primarily due to the way that they hold up in a crash. My 2001 replaced my Mercedes 300D which was rear ended while I was stoped at a trafic light. I would go with the 7.3 L diesel. Of corse my Mercedes was also a diesel. I like the longevity of diesel engines and the fact that I am geting 18 MPG in a mixed city and highway driving cycle. On a trip I have gotten 21 MPG on the freeway.
We have an '03 2wd with the 5.4 and I think the engine is awesome, Great torque @ low rpm's and hp for the size of the vehicle. Right before it....we had a Chevy Suburban w/ 5.3 and talk about night and day. The day I test drove it..the salesman let me take it down to my wife's work to show her....On the freeway I opened it up a little on an empty stretch of freeway....I did a pull from 70-90 and it was still pulling good at the top end...it didn't feel like I was running out of power.
Before the lift and big tires my wife was getting 13-15 mpg (city no major gridlock traffic of course).
The only major problem I see/have is the loss of oil - no leaks....but I have read in other forums..that other owners (trucks & suv) with the 5.4, they have experienced this too. And no...there is no smoke blowing out of the tail pipe.
