OK here is what is going on I have a 99 f350 with 225000 miles on it i just got it and it runs like crap. I used the snap-on modus and did a buzz test and it gave me a p1298 idm fault code then i did a balance test and it gave me a p0269 cyl # 3 and p0284 cyl# 8 code. so now the question is what to do would that be a bad idm or bad injectors or both what step should i do next. I am new to these trucks and am totally lost can any one help with this
If you've had the CPS recall done then ignore the #3 & #8 failure issues. That's a common side effect of the "new & improved" CPS"
P1298 could be an issue, but for any real help we'll need a more accurate description than "runs like crap." Any specific details or symptoms you can share with us?
the first thing i should say is that this truck has been sitting for three years and only started once every six months but had the same problem when he parked it. ok i will try my best to describe how it runs. First off it is slow to start and takes more than one try and puffs white smoke out the tail pipe. once it starts it acts like it is missing and sounds like the injectors are really loud for a few minutes then sounds kinda like a helicopter. then when you drive it it has no power off the line put then when the rpms come up it seams to run a little better. the guy that i got it from said that it needed an injector harness but they check out good and has had the 50 cent mod done. the cps was changed the old one was black and the new one is gray don't know if that makes any difference or not. i have drained the fuel and changed the filters. i have ohms tested the glow plugs and the check out good and so do the injectors. it will from time to time run good for a minute and then go right back to the same. need less to say i am lost and cant afford to take it to a shop. if you need more info to help let me know what it is and i will post it if i can thanks for your input
changed the oil and checked oil level and it is good it runs about the same after it warms up. it might run a little better but not much. i just don't know why i get the idm code when i do the buzz test. can it be caused by a bad injector?
You have 225k on it, I replaced my injectors close to 300k, but it is a tow truck, so it worked all day long and then some pulling cars, I hear that people that use truck as a daily driver (to work and back) and not pulling loads replace them a lot sooner, so it may be that time. May be someone else could be a better help. Good luck!
P. S. Did you do a buzz test? You did say that, but buzz test does not show codes, it makes every injector buzz, so you can hear if they are good or not, and compare sounds.
when i did the buzz test they all sounded the same and then gave the idm code. when i did the contubution test it gave me the codes for #3 and # 8 injectors
well i looked at it more to day and it looks like it is blowing white smoke. could this be bad seals on the injectors. my battery light is on but it is charging could this be part of my problems
